“Maritime museum now "MOM" but still a good stop”
Reviewed January 13, 2012

We saw Cheech Marin's collection of small paintings at MOM. We were so impressed and the gentleman who was the docent was so friendly that we are considering a membership. There are still some maritime museum objects upstairs. The small scale model of Cannery Row was captivating, as was the oil painting of the Chinese fishing village c.1880.

“Nice finish to the day”
Reviewed December 14, 2011

We stopped in this museum during our stay and while it was small it was enjoyable. They have a nice working lighthouse exhibit which will have the engineer with you analyzing all the gears and clutches while you raid the gift shop.
We were lucky enough to have Tom, Museum Docent/Guide, as our host during our visit. He was very informative about the history of Monterey and made the visit much better than it would have been without him.
If you like museums then you will enjoy the MOM.

“Very Disappointing - Bring Back the Original!”
Reviewed November 23, 2011

I grew up in Monterey and have fond memories of the Allen Knight Maritime Museum. Knight had a huge collection of maritime and nautical historical items that now sit in a warehouse. Why? Because the museum board decided to replace the maritime museum with the now "Museum of Monterey". They destroyed the very heart and soul of the old museum with environmental displays that are done far better at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
