Monterey and the wharf area in particular is a great place to visit but beware of the parking Weenie. This is a little man in his electric cart whizzing around making certain the slightest infraction get penalized.
Apparently the City Of Monterey has jobbed out the parking fine business to a corporation in Inglewood, CA. So it is simply a money making operation and apparently Monterey inhabitants have nothing to do with it.
So while the locals are very nice folk and the city and surrounds are attractive it can put a real stain on your day when you get done doing what you are doing and find that little slip under the wiper blade.
in our case we parked a little out of the lines in the truck and trailer parking area because our boat trailer was longer than the spaces. We had purchased two all day parking passes for the rig and had asked the Harbor Master where to park while we took our boat out to watch whales for the day. There is only so much you can do trying to follow local ordinances, but apparently this was not enough.
Despite being off season, (the parking lot mostly empty) and no signage to specify that what we did would result in a fine we go ticketed. It would have been cheaper not to buy parking passes. I mean what for? You get a ticket anyway.
After a little research I realized that the parking fine situation in Monterey is way over the top. Lot of complaints on Yelp and other sites. Wish I had read my review before going.
So if you do plan a stay in Monterey be aware of the parking situation. It can really ruin a great day.
