The wharf itself is a tourist attraction - with the restaurants trying to grab your attention and get you in to eat what usually is an overpriced OK meal. But, if you can get by the hustle and bustle and walk out to the end there are a few concessions that offer whale watching trips out on the bay. You can also walk out to the end and go upstairs over Rappa's Restaurant to see the view around the bay and the harbor.

This wharf (especially after leaving San Fran's FW the previous day) has a older feel to it. The shops are basic but nice. Theres a cool view of some sea lions off the top of the restaurant at the end of the pier. The restaurants all pass out samples of their chowder which is fun. I definitely recommend having some. In my opinion Crabby Jim's had the best chowder, great views of the water and a nice fireplace table (romantic and yummy).

I've been here in the past, and was very disappointed on this visit. The Old Wharf is a tourist trap, filled with nothing but t-shirt and souvenier shops, most selling the same or similar overpriced merchandise. At one store, they even charge you if you want a BAG for your recently bought merchandise!! The restaurants, overlooking the Monterey Bay, have such potential, but never rise above mediocre. Most of the food served is fried, calorie-laden, just a touch above "fast food" designation. I will not be back.

If you like being shouted at by restaurant touts, and eat in overpriced restaurants serving OK food, then visit. If you want to have a normal meal in the evening just go to the downtown historic part of Monterrey. Obviously it is pretty, but sooo tacky

This is a really fun place to walk around. Lots of good place to eat and free clam chowder. Lots of gift shops. Whale watching boats are popular and the view from the top of Rappa's is wonderful. George, the bird man if popular with his group of parrots too. But we miss the monkey.
