We feel so lucky that a friend recommended Bistro Moulin for a family birthday dinner. What a find! We loved the ambiance and the service was outstanding. Every dish we enjoyed was prepared perfectly, and the local fish I ate was one of the best plates on the menu. My husband said his mussels were nothing short of superb.

Though we go to Monterey regularly, we only discovered Bistro Moulin on this trip (thanks to a hi Zagat rating). Since it's close to the Aquarium we specifically made a rather late reservation to not have any kind of parking aggravation. Standard French items (terrine, moules, onion soup) were standouts. The specialty of the evening, cailles (quails) in cherry sauce, was terrific. The wine list is good and quite sufficient. Prices are rather standard for coastal CA for this quality of food; the chef is very hands-on; the service was excellent. Absolutely to be recommended.

We were in Northern California for 9 days, eating out every night and looking for a great food experience. And we were not disappointed (even out of San Francisco / includiiing Headlsburg North of Sonoma at Willi's for tapas). Generally pretty amazing. Highly Perbacco in SF's Financial District.... WOW !!!

Bistro Le Moulin in Monterey was the exception on our list though

Location is OK / Chairs are not comfortable / Service is efficient and fast
Problem is food as most entrees are "reheated"
We had the Gnocchis, the "Duck Confit" and the "Coq au Vin" (website says 2 of these are Chef's signature) !!!
All these plates were prepared in advance including the sides. They threw some aragula greens under my duck (told me it would be spinnach) and that was it. Essentially the chef and his assistant are heating up the food and that's it. There is no creativity or real effort. If you compare what is available in the city (we loved Passion Fish the night before), it is well under par....

It is not that Food was that bad but just not OK for the price. It is equivalent to what you would buy at your local catering or traiteur and put in your oven at home on a Wednesday night. Prices are comparable to other places ($120 for 1 shared appetizer, 2 main courses and 1 bottle of California red / no dessert or coffee).

French Chef seems to have taken the easy route here (at least in our opinion)

I was surprised to see Bistro Moulin at #11 in Monterey - I would have put it much higher! We were given seats on short notice on a busy night with no reservations, and had some spectacular dishes with delicious wine in a cozy, countryside bistro atmosphere. The food was spiced just right, bringing out subtle flavor without anything overpowering. I had the escargot and the confit de canard, my wife the gratinee a l'oignon and one of the salads. The wine selection was excellent - we had glasses of Sostener pinot noir which were wonderful. Everybody was friendly, and this really was a highpoint of our evening in Monterey
