“Comfortable lodging in noiser neighborhood”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 22, 2011

We spent three nights at this lodge on a family trip to visit the area. We did enjoy our trip overall - the location is close to wharf and nice beach, good restaurants. The staff were very welcoming and helpful overall and our daughter LOVED the attractive pool area. An older facility, it has been well-maintained and they make the most of it. The beds were really comfortable and we all slept wonderfully.

Our troubles, though: Originally reserved a two-room family suite, and a few days later received a phone call stating a "system error" and that only adjoining rooms were available for two adults and one child. Upon our arrival we discovered that adjoining did NOT mean an interior door between two rooms as we'd understood (those are "connecting" rooms - fyi) Our 11 year old child could not stay alone in one room, so my husband and I had to stay as next door neighbors, on an anniversary, less than ideal. I think what bothered us really was that we discovered a large group was there the same time we were - and we suspect that we were actually "bumped" since the motel preferred to accomodate this large group of 35 guests with the family suite, rather than letting us keep it - though this is unconfirmed----? Our rooms were fine and had many convenient amenities. Though, the entry ceiling had mildew on it, causing the room to smell a bit off - we just wiped it off ourselves. I think discovering these two problems on our arrival colored my perception of the place. The building is older, and shows it, though it does appear well-maintained, and they do the best they can to make it attractive with landscaping and general upkeep. The location near a noisy busy thoroughfare, and a view of the bay over the adjacent Valero station and dumpster detract a bit from the advertised feeling of this "residential" ? neighborhood. The park across is somewhat worn and the pond rather green and overpopulated with birds - though quite pretty Canada geese, a bit messy.

I think after looking at the hotel's website photos, we were disappointed at the neighborhood location and general appearance. The photos are very "flattering". Though if you can get a good rate and have realistic expectations, you can have a lovely time at the Monterey Bay Lodge!

This was not spacious, but it had all that we needed. The place was clean, the courtyard beautiful, and you could look out our door and see the bay. Beautiful, quiet, and a great way to kick off our road trip along the coast!

Even though this is a motel style, that is as close as it gets. The grounds were landscaped, the pool was enclosed by a glazed parition, with a small fountain for children to play in, plenty of beds tables and chairs to relax by the pool. The rooms were of an average size but very well equipped with fridge, microwave and safe. Everthing appeared to be of a standard you would normally associate with a very good hotel. I normally stay at Marriott hotels and was a lit apprensive at staying at a small motel but I was very please we chose this place. Everywhere was clean and tidy with frendly and helpfull staff within walking distance of Fishermans Wharf, what more could you ask for.

We scored an amazing deal on our 3-night stay (~$65/night) and were very happy with our stay at The Monterey Bay Lodge. It is definitely a place we would love to return to someday -- great location, great rooms, great value.

The location is convenient -- very near to Fisherman's Wharf and directly across from Dennis the Menace park, an absolute must if you have children. Parking is free and abundant, and the rooms are nicely remodeled and offer the feel of a 3-star hotel. We checked in after midnight and received an upstairs room in the back complex (likely not their finest due to our late arrival), yet we had absolutely no complaints about our clean, comfortable and well-stocked room, which included a mid-sized fridge and a microwave. The decor is fitting for a coastal town and there were many nice, small touches -- free organic teas and coffees, complimentary bottles of water, an embossed stamp on the toilet paper, and ribbons tied around the shower curtains. There were also free copies of USA Today at the front desk.

We purchased a 2-day pass to the Monterey Bay Aquarium from the hotel for the same price of a single day's admission ($29.95), and we drove to Cannery Row to park ($1.50/hr in the public stalls). You can walk to the area, as well, but that can take 30+ minutes.

My only disappointment was with the quality of the front desk staff. For a small establishment, I was expecting friendlier, more helpful service. I'm not even sure the midnight staffer ever cracked a smile or made a friendly comment, although he was perfectly professional otherwise. If only the staff took a little more pride in their great hotel, I'd give this place 5-stars for sure.

we liked this hotel. It was good value, clean, comfortable, and the attention to detail in the rooms was excellent. The staff in the reception were ultra helpful and very knowledgeable about the area. (thank you Vince!) In my eyes the staff moved this hotel from good to excellent.

The hotel is In a good location, close to the attractions and excellent resturaunts in Monterey. We had some of the best meals on our trip here in the bay. I can recommend this place and would stay again.

We had already planned to try out this older but well-preserved hotel in an overlooked area of the greater Monterey area; so we reserved a room without hesitation. Overall, the experience was satisfactory - albeit with some rough spots in the newly created King Suite (Room 101).
Excellent Sleep Quality but a King Bed is too large for the bedroom. Living room hide-a-bed was superfluous and uncomfortable for seating, a rollaway would do just fine for extra guests - bathroom access through bedroom only.
Nice kitchen.
Avoidable, attached cafe'
Smaller aircraft Flight Patterns close by but tolerable subject to strict curfew.

This was a great experience for us and our pet (dog).

We were in Monterey (for a week) for our first time, trying to find a place we might like for an annual Thanksgiving retreat. The motel is in a great location. It's a couple of hundred yards to the beach and a great biking/walking trail. 100 yards to another park with pedal boat rentals. Many restaurants and cafes within walking distance (under a mile). Within a 15 minute drive you've Carmel (tons of great shops, restaurants and walking), Cannery Row, a Costco, Whole Foods and lots more.

The motel has very friendly staff, a pool, a hot tub and an attached restaurant (we didn't use it). If you have a cage, you're allowed to leave the dog in the room (if it stays quiet) and enjoy the pool! The rooms were bright, clean and quite efficient/roomy (see pix). We had a fridge and microwave too. In fact the room has two entrances; one is the main door (ours had a view of the ocean) and the 2nd was a patio door on a porch overlooking the pool. Our only complaint is the coffee supplied in the room is awful.

We traveled with a dog and we (& the dog) loved this motel. With a beach and 2 parks within 100 yards (use the lighted & signed crosswalks), "Convenience Notices" are posted on the places you cannot take your dog and those are high traffic "people" areas where it would be inappropriate to take your pet & force it upon others. There were many other pets (at least 5) there while we were there.

Our rate (including pet fee) was $100/night and we thought that was a great deal for the area and amenities. We (and Toby - the dog) will be returning to the Monterey Bay Lodge in the future.
