This was a one-night stop-over in Monterey on our drive down the Pacific Coast Highway. As such, we did not have a reservation, so we were pleased to get a room at the last minute. The $179 rate was a little steep considering the hotel was not within walking distance to the Aquarium or the Cannery, but we were glad just to have a place to put our heads down after a long day of driving.
The room was adequate, however in serious need of an updating. A coffee-maker was noticeably absent, but bottled water was available. The bathroom was large, but also in need of a renovation, and pretty skimpy on the amenities. Our room was quiet, thankfully, since it looked like the resort was pretty booked based on the number of people in the lobby lounge and out on the greens. We did not have time to check out the pool or the business center (if they had one) but we did eat in the TusCA Ristorante that evening which was delicious. (Knuckles Sports Bar was too rowdy and crowded so we were glad we opted for more formal fare).
This hotel is obviously in a transition period. Once the accomodations are brought up to date, this will be a fabulous destination. Lobby, fireplace lounge and surrounding grounds are lovely, but the rooms and building hallways are a little shabby. Staff, however, are very pleasant and helpful. Upon our checkout the next morning, a representative was able to arrange tickets for us to the Aquarium and gave us suggestions for breakfast.
Would recommend this hotel if you can get an online discount rate.

Stayed here for a weekend away with my sister. Rooms were average size. The bed very comfy. The bathroom small and outdated. No airconditioning was not too bad as it cools off at night, but with the window open, you could hear people leaving the bar at closing time and a leaf blower starting at 8 am! The hotel has a newly renovated restaurant that was very good, somewhat expensive. They are just starting a major renovation of the rooms (much needed though the beds are nice grand beds) and they are building a spa to open late next year. Pool was average. Fire pit closed early, but was nice- made smores! 24 hour fitness room looked well-equipped. Golf course looked nicely maintained, but did not golf.
We were there mostly for wine tasting in the carmel valley- much smaller than napa, but less crowded and the wines are very compareable, as most large wineries grow there grapes here. The tastings are mostly free. We really liked Heller organic wines- all just about 20 minutes from the hotel. We also travled down about 30 mintues on 101 to Blackstone winery- worth the trip for free tastings and there are some smaller wineries nearby as well in Gonzalez.
Overall, not up to Hyatt standards, but they are changing that and will stay again after the renovation is done for the location- close to the freeway and downtown, but not walking distance to the beach or to cannery row.

Based on the past review, we booked this hotel knowing that we wouldn't be staying in the room too much plus it was the only one available. However, even the little time we did spend was too much. We stayed in building number 2. The hall smelled badly (like cat urine) and the carpet was dirty. Once we got onto the room, it looked more like a Days Inn, it was very basic, not even a coffee maker or a working clock. The carpet inside the room was as old and dirty as the hall and the lamp next to the bed was broken too. I will not stay here or recommend this Hyatt to anyone. It cost waay too much for so little.

Stayed here at the end of April for a conference. Plus side: VERY close to the Wharf, Cannery Row and Carmel; friendly staff (the front desk clerk assisted in finding an urgent care clinic for me - strep throat during my trip!). Down side: noisy music from the front lobby (we stayed in building 6, and could hear the loud music all night - complained and nothing was done); restaurants on-site are nothing special and overpriced (especially breakfast); business center is almost impossible to find and difficult to use fax machine, etc. I was most disappointed with the rooms - though ample in size, there is no thermostat to control warm/cold. The bathroom is big, but unimpressive in every way. And also, the water smelled like sulfur/chlorine - not pleasant. Only stayed here because my work conference was being held at this hotel. It would be very difficult for me to recommend this hotel to anyone.

The name is big, the grounds are nice, the price is EXPENSIVE and the in-room coffee really really sucks. The linens were changed, the TV worked, the room had plenty of space, but the decor is very outdated. The room maid service is very reliable, the water bottles were always replaced, the bed is squishy, and the walls are THIN. The internet access is an extra $10 per day which id outrageous considering the cost of the room. But, the short walk to the beach is great and the location is perfect so that access to 1 and the 68 is sweet. Cost is high unless you can book with a specialty rate.

We stayed at the Hyatt for 1 night during our trip to the aquarium (4/10/07). It's about a 5 minute drive to the aquarium/cannery row from the Hyatt. The grounds leading up to the hotel are beautiful, as is the lobby and restaurant; however, the hotel rooms are average and a bit overpriced. I can't really complain because we got the room for $90 through priceline, but if you pay the going rate of $175+, it's a bit steep. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, the linens were nice--down comforters, and the hotel itself seemed quiet and safe. One of my concerns with hotels is how clean the bathrooms are. I have two toddlers and dislike putting them in hotel tubs. This bathroom was clean and I was happy with that. The negatives that I saw were that the hallways leading to the rooms were unheated and had a musty smell (the room did not have this smell). There is no free continental breakfast, but they do give you a $5 credit toward breakfast in their restaurant. There is an $11 "resort fee" in addition to the quoted room rate. All in all, the hotel was a good value for $90 a night. Hopefully after renovations, the rooms will be worth $175+ a night. I would most likely stay here again---for $90 a night.

My parent's visited us last weekend and I booked a room at the Monterey Hyatt Regency Hotel. I found the lobby very elegant, new, and stylish. The setting on a golf course away from the downtown was very nice and views of the greens and mountains were great. I would recommend paying extra for a upper floor facing the golf course or pool. The staff was very helpful and treated my parents well. I dinned at the two restaurants and found the food flavourful. The information in the lobby mentioned that the rooms are being updated at this time so I feel that this will even be a better place and value in the months to come. I would recommend this hotel without a doubt especially once all the rooms are all updated.
