“Quiet Location”
Reviewed January 31, 2014

The Hyatt Regency offers a quiet peaceful hotel nearby all the action of Monterey. The rooms facing the golf course are beautiful. The spa and exercise facilities are excellent. The breakfast buffet offers everything. The only downside is that the rooms are in a row of separate buildings and though the walkway is covered, it can be a pretty chilly walk in December!

Room Tip: The golf course rooms offer a lovely view.

“Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel & Spa on Del Monte Golf Course elevates luxury accommodation to a new level”… so says their home page on their website. I must have stayed at different Hyatt Regency in Monterey. Because once you get past the lobby, which in all honesty is nice and somewhat modern, the rooms are extremely dated and shabby. My room, while huge, felt like it had been built in the 1980’s and not updated since. Luckily we were there during the winter season, because the rooms do not have air conditioning; at least my room did not. A sign next to the thermostat instructs you to open your patio door to cool the room down… Even the basics, like the towels and linens, were old and dingy and the carpets were stained. Water pressure in the shower was non-existent (which, I’ll give them, might have been caused by the drought situation in CA)

The condition of the rooms was especially disappointing considering the exorbitant rates we paid. I was there for a conference and a number of people were complaining of the condition of their rooms. Other guests of the conference chose to stay at luxury hotel on Canary Row, and not only paid less for their rooms, but also had the benefit of being downtown and within walking distance of all the Monterey attractions (keep in mind, the Hyatt Regency is outside of the downtown area and you’ll need a car to get around).

Usually Hyatt Regency is an outstanding brand and I’ve stayed at a number of their properties and really liked them. Unfortunately, this property was a huge disappointment.

We spent six nights at the Monterey Hyatt Regency at the end of December, 2013 and into January, 2014. The prime attraction for us was a regional bridge tournament sponsored by the American Contract Bridge League. This is an old and very large hotel, with rooms spread out over many buildings. It is not a luxury hotel, but it is very good in its class, and the hotel staff did everything to make our stay highly pleasurable. We arrived on our 56th wedding anniversary, and the front desk upgraded our room to one overlooking the golf course, which we greatly appreciated.

Parking can be a problem, but it is not really a problem because the hotel provides free valet parking service. There is no charge to hotel guests for parking. No restaurants except for the hotel restaurants are within walking distance. The hotel provides free shuttle service to downtown Monterey, and, of course, one can drive oneself there. The hotel food was more than adequate. We ate in the Fireside Lounge several times, in the sports bar once, and in the formal dining room three times. We were never disappointed. Although we normally don’t eat big breakfasts, we really liked the breakfasts in the formal dining room. My wife went for the cafeteria-style offerings, and I had pancakes with maple syrup which were absolutely delicious.

The hotel is only a few miles from Carmel, and a visit to this quaint tourist town is well worthwhile.

We greatly enjoyed the food arrangements at the convention center for the bridge players, which included ample sandwiches and other food for very low prices. Unlike bridge tournaments we have played in from all over the United States, we were able to charge the food we purchased in the convention center to our room.

We greatly enjoyed our stay at the Hyatt Regency and we would certainly stay here again if we come back to play bridge in a future year.

I stayed here with my entire family for a special vacation. We all had a great experience. The rooms were very comfortable and private. The hotel had many great options for running and walking. The swimming pool and hot tub was an added bonus. Breakfast was expensive but well worth it. All in all, this hyatt worked great for a family with diverse needs. Highly recommended.

Recently stayed here (again) for a business conference. I have no issues with the staff, they are friendly and helpful, but the facilities are grossly outdated, and for the expense, I would expect much more. Absolutely loathe the bathroom doors - the opaque panels may look nice, but if someone is in there with the light on, you may as well turn on a light in the room. Very disturbing if you are the person trying to sleep. The one elevator for every three buildings is ridiculous. It is confusing at best to figure out which building you need to enter to get to yours. The distance from each building to the main building or Conference Center is an issue, especially in bad weather. The kicker was thinking I would use the business center to print a boarding pass. They may have "free Wi-Fi" (trust me, you are paying for it). When I tried to use it, I discovered that there was a $5 fee just to access the internet for 10 minutes! What the heck? Wow....ultimate cheap move. Then I discovered that our "Special Conference Rate" of $200 per night is $70 more than their standard rate. Another "what the heck" moment. All I can say is that I will book off-site for any future business at this hotel.

We have stayed here at least 3 times previously but never in building 21. The sounds of the road (Mark Thomas Dr. as well as Highway 1) are constantly annoying. You can hear cars roaring by with honking horns, loud motorcycles and just sounds of passing cars and it is fairly constant. The windows must be closed at all times. In the back buildings (6-11 and 12-18) I don't remember this being a problem but it has been a problem on our stay while we are here for out current conference. I would never stay in this building again or any building near the road. On a positive note, the pool is warm and the room is clean and roomy. Cannery Row and Del Monte Mall are both only a few minutes drive away so the location is convenient but the highway noise is awful. So choose your room wisely.

We were warmly received, stayed 2 nights, and service was great. Clean up to date rooms, VERY helpful concierge, easy check in; check out, and good breakfast.

I would go there again if I were in Monterey.

Convenient for attractions; dinner, and 17 mile drive is not too far away. Even Carmel is not a huge drive from here.

Room Tip: We had what might be a lesser room overlooking the parking lot, but it was fine, quiet. It would hav...
