“Okay Stay”
Reviewed January 3, 2008

I really want to love this place. The room and hotel was recently renovated and was gorgeous but house keeping needs to be improved. The house keeping did not throughly clean the room. There were dirt spots on both the desk and the mirror. In addition, the past occupants had opened and drank about a 1/3 of it. Housekeeping thought it was still full and left it with the compliamentary sign on it. In addition, I went to get ice and opened the silver ice backet and saw two smoked cigarettes in it. I called the front desk since I did not want to be charged the $250 smoking fee and to their credit they offered to switch rooms. We said no thanks since it was fairly minor and they went above and beyond and gave us a free breakfast. I was impressed with their response.

The shower did not work properly but was still functional. We flashed the toilet with only liquid in it and it ran for about 35 minutes before stopping. Their is no tub in the bathroom which could be an issue for children and there was no fan in the bathroom. The door to the bathroom is a sliding door and you can hear the person using the bathroom which could be embarassing.

It can be hard to find parking near the bulding and the hotel mentioned they have valet service but we did not see it.

The hotel is gorgoues and the breakfast was very good but about $15 to $20 per entree. We did not golf, use the pool, or workout.

We arrived to the Hyatt with some concerns after reading the reviews... but WOW. We had a fantastic stay, this is not a 5 Star hotel, nor does it pretend to be, but we had a wonderful time here. We were lucky enough to get one of the newly renovated rooms, it was beautifully decorated and very restful.

The main restaurant at the hotel is also very good, the quality of the food was excellent and the server (Michelle) was outstanding. On our final night we ordered room service and the food arrived within the agreed time (rather unusual in itself) and was of fantastic restaurant quality.

Considering what we paid for this hotel on a priceline deal we really lucked out! The hotel is fantastic and really is a lovely place to stay in Monterey.

No early check-in, told to come back later twice, even after the supposed check-in time because room was not ready. Dark now, and given a room far away on second floor. Had to carry all the luggage up on our own with a baby carrier. Opened room, and found someone else's luggage still in the room. Had to walk all the way back into the lobby. But while we going through the hall heard three complaints regarding the awful smell in the rooms. Mildewy and smokey. At the check in counter, we're told no manager was available, and tried to give us the awful room that we had heard about in the same hall. Finally given another room that was supposed to have a great golf view. What a joke, it was dark already and the room also had a nasty smell and looked liked a dingy room, but were told the hotel was fully booked, and no better room could be given. Staff was rude and would never want to go there again. First time staying at a Hyatt, and if I had a choice would not stay at any other Hyatt with the service given there.

We started off our vacation with two nights in Monterey - we recevied a great rate through our travel agent and booked the room months in advance - I was a little worried about the reviews I had read, but was hopeful that our stay would be great because the hotel was under renovation. We did receive a recently renovated room and it was very nicely done! I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. There is no air conditioning in the rooms - of course, we didn't need it in November - and there was a ceiling fan. Bathroom area very nice and roomy - and beds were very comfortable with plush pillows.

I have stayed here 4 or 5 times over the last 7 years or so.. The problem with this hotel, as I see it, is that it's a) very busy and b) somewhat past it's sell by date.. There are ongoing renovations, i accept that, but I have yet to sample the new rooms.. The old rooms are tired now.. There are some nice room locations, as it's all laid out in small blocks, some overlooking a golf course, and the room I had last time was a corner ground floor room with picture windows on two sides and gardens outside the window.. nice.. But, frankly, the room decor was more than a little tired, the bathroom very small, and it let the hotel down.. The are the odd quirks, too.. Last year I had a room there that had only hot water in both the hot and cold taps/fawcets.. Eating options are poor, frankly, and eating out may be the best option.. There's a sports bar for burgers, nachos etc (nice enough food and drink, but it's loud and brash, and the floor is covered in peanut cases..) and a, frankly, a rather poor main restaurant that is ano substitute for the one it replaced.. The lobby bar is quite pleasant.. It is not a shining example of the Hyatt Regency Brand but, you can get some good rates and all-in deals.. so search them out.. Lack of aircon is not a problem as the climate is mild..

We've stayed at this hotel 3 times in the last six months and each time it has been great. We have 5 year old twin boys and they love the big heated outdoor pool and ping pong table. When we got to our room we discovered it was very far from the main pool, The Spyglass pool and the pool that was near the room we had was much smaller and very far from the main hotel area. When I expressed my disappointment, the staff said they were completely sold out but they did have a room with a King bed instead of the double we had requested, (it was Thanksgiving weekend) but they could upgrade us to a view room, with the King bed and provide a rollaway. The room was absolutely beautiful, all new carpet, beautiful new bathroom, all very Zen like. The room had beautiful furnishings and a new flat screen TV and the bedding was heavenly, high quality sheets, down comforter, wonderful! . They provided a rollaway with no extra charge and gave us a complilmentary breakfast for 4 which amounted to about $75.00. The breakfast buffet is wonderful and when my son wanted one of their homemade donuts without the coconut, the pastry chef happily said she would scrape it off! We love this property and usually DO NOT like the big hotel chains and would rather stay in a small boutique hotels, but the Hyatt in Monterey has won us over with ther fabulous service.! It's a great place to bring the kids. We'll be back again for our next long weekend!
