I was taken here for my birthday and really loved the room. It was above the bar downstairs but I didn't mind the noise since I'm a night owl. There is a lovely fireplace which was wonderful with the log they provided and the bed was very comfortable. Wonderful antique furniture and balcony access only made it better. I had the prime rib in the restaurant which was delicious. They were very friendly, allowing us to tour through the hotel and see all of the secret nooks and crannies. The pool looked nice but it was November so I didn't use it. All in all, I recommend this place for the charm and comfort. I was made aware that this was featured on the Travel Channel and also that it's supposed to be haunted. For me, none of that matters. It's just a great place in Gold Country! Be sure to visit the nearby graveyard.

Room Tip: Avoid the room over the bar if you like it quiet.

We stayed midweek at the Leger in room #2. Our check-in was seamless as our hostess was prompt, courteous and showed us up to our room. Wow, that has not happed in quite some time.
We ate at Franks café for 2 meals. (open 7am till 3pm)
Everything in our room was in good order. We were a bit taken back that the entrance to the balcony was through our window, but after a few duck and step crossings it became a non-issue.
The only snag during our stay was that the hotel restaurant did not open on Thursday. We received a phone call from our hostess informing us of this situation and were appreciative for the 'heads up' so we could make other arrangements.
The owner was gracious enough to drive in from the bay area to open the bar.
Would we return? Yes.
Jackson, Sutter Creek and San Andreas are just a few minutes away. This would be a great stay during the Frog Jumping Contest.

Room Tip: A room in the front means you will hear the bar and restaurant patrons. We loved the creaking floor...

So far the highlight of a two week trip to California. Stayed in George's room. No ghost last night.... The room had old-time oil lamps if you wanted to turn off the electric light. Neat old time town and hotel everyone around and staff were very friendly. Prime rib and all the food was Great! I only wish we could of stayed longer. Hope to return soon. Pool could use some lounge chairs. The basement rooms are a bit spooky and would be a great spot for a dinner party. Had a bit too much fun in the Saloon, :-)

Since the Hotel Leger is not listed under restaurants in Moke Hill, I am reviewing it here. Although we did not stay overnight in the hotel, we did come for their Easter Brunch. The food was all prepared by their chef, Chuck, and his helper, Andrew I think, who is a culinary academy student. Anyway, the food was quite good, especially given the remote location and size of the town. There was champagne and mimosas to start and then four tables of food choices: salads, fruit, and breads; eggs Benedict, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, filet of sole, mussels, shrimp, smoked salmon; potatoes, Mac and cheese, asparagus, skewered chicken, ham; a dessert table with enormous strawberries and whipped cream, cheesecake, and carrot cake. It was really quite an effort for only two cooks! There were four of us and we all thought is was a great Easter brunch.

All the staff at the Leger are exceedingly friendly and helpful. I had made several phone calls to set it up and then to change the number in our party and at the last minute to tell them we would be late. Each time I phoned whoever answered was cheerful and complied with my requests and changes and made me feel that I was not being a pain in the neck, which I know I was!

If you visit Mokelumne Hill you will see that the hotel is the anchor of social life in the tiny gold rush town. When you are there you will feel as if you had stepped into a time warp or the Twilight Zone (in a good way).

We saw the hotel when it was shown on Hotel Impossible. The Hotel, the people, and the town of Moke Hill are everything positive that the show suggested. We were welcomed in on a very short notice for three nights and then totally accomodated thru two extensions of our trip for an eight night stay at the hotel. Leanne, Heather and all the staff were very friendly and helpful to us thru our visit. We ate three nights in the restaurant and found it to be an excellent experience in terms of atmosphere, service, and food quality and taste. Be prepared that it is an historic hotel that is a little quirky at times, but that is all part of the charm of the place. Be sure to try both a room overlooking the street and one overlooking the valley. Eat on the balcony in the restaurant if possible for a view of the valley and orange trees in the courtyard.

Room Tip: Rooms on the back face east and the sunrise, and are away from street noise. Rooms on the front a...

We enjoyed another stay at the Hotel Leger. Clean, quiet and comfortable in rear rooms. It's old so hot water can be dodgy if someone else is using it. Restaurant is very good and bar is jumping with locals and visitors.

Room Tip: Choose a room at the rear; it is bound to be quiet. It's an old hotel(1851) so if your need for...

I was quite pleased to see how well maintained this historic hotel is, it is always nice to see that pieces of California history are being saved.

The first night we stayed in Room 11, which ended up being a bit noisy due to the band at the bar. The room itself was nice, very clean and with an attached bathroom, although there really was no place other than the bed to sit and have a conversation. The beds are vintage bed frames, but were very comfortable.

The next morning we happened to mention that the room was noisy and Heather, the manager, immediately offered to move us to another room and had us look at the rooms she suggested first before picking a room.

We then moved to Room 10, which is a more historic feeling room and is laid out a little better. After borrowing a second chair from the hallway we were able to have a place to sit and relax in the room itself. Again, this room was very clean and well maintained and has its own bathroom attached. This room was much quieter as well since it is at the opposite corner of the hotel from the bar.

The courtyard and pool area are very nice, clean and a great place to sit and relax. We also enjoyed the old jail and cellar areas in the basement, which have been set up so you can hang out in them if you choose to.

I would definitely stay here again, although likely mid-week to avoid live bands at the bar. Be sure to ask about any events happening when you book your stay.

PLEASE NOTE: this is a historic and very old hotel. DO NOT expect a super spotless, modern hotel with all the amenities: there are no TVs or phones in the room. The floors are not level and are creaky, there are obvious signs of age in the stone walls and some of the original doors. After all, the hotel is well over a hundred years old and it shows it, but that is the point of the place. If you don't want an historic hotel experience do not stay here as you will probably not like it.

People looking for an old gold rush era or 1800's hotel experience will love it.
