“Newer loft hotel near SFO”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 6, 2012

My second loft experience - much better than the first. The Aloft (part of Starwood) seems to cater to a younger crowd. The room was simple with spartan furniture, excellent bed, and a modern bathroom. Unlike other loft hotels, the walls had a grass paper covering and the floor was carpeted. Internet was free but very slow. The hotel does not attempt to provide any dining. Snacks are available in the lobby in a self-service deli format near the front desk. The bar does offer a small menu but both the bartender and other patrons warned me that the food is microwave or toaster oven fare. Much better to walk across the parking lot to the Westin and use their amenities. Overall...comfortable lodging but no in-house dining.

Dear Mark L,

Thanks for giving us another try and the thumbs up review! Our gourmet appetizers are designed to provide a quick bit while you kick back with your cocktail. It's awesome that you found the sit down options at the Westin for your dining needs. Come back again and let our friendly A team take care of you!

The Hotel has a very modern look and feel. Sometimes form rules over function. The lobby is amazing with a very nice bar, great seating, computer stations, and billard table. The rooms are nice but a little concrete bunker feel as any modern decor. One example of form over function is the hangers are placed front to back instead of side to side which makes it hard to get clothes behind the first hanger. The shower and bathroom area is all glass and very nice. The staff were very nice and tried to be helpful but since they are so new they have a lot to learn. They only have bar food but the Westin is only across the parking lot with a good resturant, the Elephant Bar. I would stay again.

This hotel will not be for everyone. However, if you are stopping over for one or two nights out of SFO and you need a low-cost, easy-peasy (my wife's term) home base this place is hard to beat. ALoft offers complimentary shuttle from both the domestic and international terminals and you can also hop on it from the hotel to catch the BART ($8.25/each way) from SFO station into SF and Bay Area. Who needs a rental car? The hotel amenities are primarily pay-as-you-go. However, there is free wifi but it needs better speed and coverage. Rooms are clean and value-priced. Fornt desk staff are friendly and helpful. GJ is terrific! Hotel shares a large parking footprint with Westin. Loved the proximity to the Bayshore trail.

An unusually large Aloft in the former location of another hotel. Noise levels on the north/west side of the hotel are pretty bad, the parking is an expensive pain, and the service at reception was so-so.

Aloft properties are generally very high quality (bedding, toiletries, decor) for their price, and this location is no exception-- that pricing plus my Starwood loyalty makes me seek Alofts for casual stays. But their concepts are no longer unique, and this location suffers from annoyances I would hope to avoid by picking a quality Starwood chain at a location convenient to SFO.

The hotel is larger than any other Aloft I've been in, and is "new" (new Aloft but in an old building). It's mostly fresh except, oddly, the ceilings have not been refinished-- not in a cool distressed way, but in a "old and forgot to patch and paint" way-- it's a bit jarring, especially in the room when you're looking up from bed.

Parking was the biggest deal-- their lot is run by a company also selling space to airport patrons (gated, no other options). While you get in-out privs via a scannable ticket, the price is the same as the airport patrons pay, $20 a day (which seems high for an airport hotel). I had trouble finding parking some days, and one day literally EVERY spot was full, so I had to park in the next hotel's lot (also a Starwood property, the lots are connected by a narrow, unmarked driveway)-- for the price, I'd think I should at least have a guaranteed spot?

Water-pressure in the bathroom/shower was on the low side.

I asked for a "quiet room" and after some hesitation, the clerk said I was in a quiet room. Turns out I was on the north/northwest end of the building, which faces both the end of the runway where jets take off (ie, throttle up to maximum), and faces the ramps on Millbrae and part of 101. Almost as noisy a room as the hotel would have, I'd think.. (west might be worse) Looking at the map later, I realize I should ask for rooms facing south, or rooms facing the pool, if you want quiet.

Apart from the "quiet" issue, checkout was slow, I didn't receive points for waiving housekeeping one day, and management didn't reply to repeated emails to the contact address on their website. To their credit, hotel management did address my concerns satisfactorily, but only after I had to get SPG customer support to prod them a couple of times.

"Aloft" is a very clever name for being next to an airport. Points for clever wordplay. The usual Aloft gym is very nice (good equipment, layout).

Recommended if you get a low rate, or aren't bringing a car, or are Starwood loyal. Otherwise this is nothing special and I'd look for a quieter hotel. The Westin immediately next door may be a good bet for SPG members.

This new hotel is quite the breath of fresh air. Modern décor, free Wifi throughout, stylish rooms, courteous staff. Pleasant bar - loved the addition of a pool table! Realtively quiet considering proximity to highway and airport.

Would have been 5 stars if they served proper meals at the hotel rather than just bar and breakfast snacks. As it is, the staff were more than happy to direct us to nearby restaurants.

Very goood value for money for the price.

I travel a lot for business and go to San Francisco occasionally. I was hoping that I would love this place because it is close to the office but I found too many things were goofy to go back.

First, they used the parking lot for airport parking so they was hardly any parking spots for the actual hotel guests. Not even a section roped off for hotel guests?

Then, when we went to check-in, the staff had their back to the front door and it took forever to get them to actually check us in even though there were no other customers in sight. We had the same experience when we tried to buy coffee a few days later and they were not even friendly.

We got to the room and it looked nice but there were dirty footprints on the bathroom floor and leftover toiletries from another hotel in the shower from a previous guest. This suggested to us that the bathroom had not been cleaned.

Also- The AC/heat did not work properly and keep in mind that you are right next to the airport so you hear a lot of noise.

There are so many other options in that area, I would not recommend this hotel unless they made some changes.

Dear KristeninDenver,

Thanks for taking time to give us some feedback. We apologize your experience was not A+ as this is our goal for every guest. The circular design of our desk does present an opportunity for us to make sure we connect with everyone who approaches our desk. Our team prides themselves in providing fun, friendly service every day at Aloft. We are partnering with parking company to create better signage to direct our long term parking and our hotel guests. This should make things easy in the very near future. The condition you found your room is not up our standard. We hope you gave us the opportunity to make it right for you by letting us know when you here. We also hope you will give us another try as we’d love the chance to give you the experience you deserve.

This is a newly renovated/remodeled hotel. Used to be a Clarion. Everything has been repainted, rewallpapered, re-carpeted, retiled. Whole hotel has been decorated in grey and blue. Lobby is modern. The lobby area was messy because the check in area had moved to temporary tables with cables. It's about 90 dollars per night to stay here versus its sister property the Westin.

Room: no chest of drawers or bathtubs Waterfall shower head that must be a water-saver. Bliss toiletries. Bed is not a heavenly bed but it was comfortable. No privacy drapes. FREE WIFI in the rooms! Loud heating/air conditioning unit.

We used Starwood points to stay here but if we had to pay we would stay at the Westin.
