“If it's the only choice in the area...”
Reviewed October 19, 2013

Had to meet an old friend south of SF while visiting there. Millbrae was in the middle so Zen Bistro was the choice. The decor is modern; service from Rosina and the whole staff was very attentive and friendly. The sushi was average. Nigiri was dry and the rice wet. Spicy tuna roll bland and the tuna did not taste fresh. Tuna tataki was served with soy based sauce. The Spicy Crunchy roll was the single standout dish.

“Fun for Sushi and Small Plates”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

Sushi is featured, but the small plates, izakaya, was fun and yummy. The grilled asparagus was delicious. Their nigiri hamachi was incredibly generous - the huge thick slice of very fresh hamachi was an unexpected surprise. They also had a regular dinner and ramen which we didn't have a chance to try - but will try on my next visit.

“The sushi is pretty good”
Reviewed August 31, 2013

They are very creative in their rolls. Not only that, but their restaurant looked pretty cool too. I loved the Dynamite roll.

I love a good Sushi that uses their imagination to create new rolls that are inspiring and delicious and that's what this place did.

“Awesome sushi!”
Reviewed May 17, 2013

Downtown Millbrae is just one exit south of the San Francisco Airport. You'd never think about coming to this area, especially given how old looking the downtown area is. There are lots of mom and pop Chinese restaurants here, but it's quite apparent that with remodeling happening that it is becoming more of a series of major chain stores too.

Within the lines of these little restaurants is Zen Bistro. It's very nice inside, and if you get the chance to sit at the sushi bar and find the nice, talkative Japanese sushi chef, you are in for a delightful surprise.

First of all, he is from Japan. That means that he knows how traditional sushi should taste, look and feel like. The quality is outstanding, with just the right size if fish and rice. The plates are good quality, the sushi bar is neat and presented nicely. This is my new favorite sushi bar in the peninsula. There is no need to go all the way down to San Mateo to have good sushi.

The Kara age was very good - not overly fried, not crispy. It was soft, tender, just the way it should be.

That said, I was disappointed with the curry rice. Not enough curry, to be exact, and the flavoring was off.

I'd say that the waiter service was a bit slow, but fine.
