“Bit far from Yosemite Valley, but great value”
Reviewed October 12, 2010

After driving A LONG WAY from Yosemite after sunset, I arrived late to find the place buzzing. Backpacker hostels tend to be like that, which is good. I reserved a room with shared facilities which was in a cabin, and was small but beautifully appointed inside, just like a B&B. Definitely a surprise. Unfortunately didn't stay around long enough to enjoy it

Would recommend it but just beware of the distance from Yosemite Valley, esp when there are roadworks around. It is, however, very good value.

My friends and I enjoyed our stay at Yosemite Bug. We loved the rustic atmosphere and the camraderie of the shared social area. I'll stay there for certain the next time I am in the area!

On route from San Deigo to Yosemite we called Yosemite Bug and secured the 'Austin Powers' room for that evening... Having back packed previously I was not holding up much hope for a nice place, however Yosemite Bug was quite a surprise.
We opted for a private room, with shower which was basic (despite the AP theme!) but clean and had everything we needed.
The spa was a nice touch with a 10 person hot tub! My partner & I opted for a treatment each after our visit to Yosemite Village. Unfortunately there was a mix up and my masseuse did not turn up. However, Dana could not have been more apologetic and offered me a free massage whenever I wanted. As I was leaving the next day I could not take them up on their offer, but was told this would be valid for whenever I return and we got a discount on our room!
YB is set in beautiful surroundings, with friendly staff and the rooms are unique!

We used the bug as our Yosemite base, about 25 mins outside of yosemite park. We had the insulated tents, which on the whole were not bad, toilets and shower were just down a short path (for night time trips to the loo bring a torch) the staff and amenities were very good. they offer a packed lunch for your days exploring which was very welcome as there was little means of food in the park. the restaurant was quite good with a good selection of food, beer and wine.

Stayed in one of the cabins with shared bathroom for 3 nights. Selected the Bug due to the lack of other available and affordable roofed accommodation. Camp Curry is too crowded and noisy, and nothing else within our budget had showers. Now let's get one thing straight: it is not a resort, it is a youth hostel.

On the positive side, the room and the bathroom were cleaned and recently renovated, although the furniture was VERY rustic. A very pleasant surprise was the cafeteria. Decent meals and reasonable prices, and the best of all, you can get a lunch bag ready to take on the trail, which is a time saver. There is a community kitchen and laundromat.

On the negative side, the room was very small. Besides the two twin beds and two night stands, there was a large and useless couch taking up lots of space. The decor and furniture in the room was VERY rustic (I repeat this just to make sure it sinks in). The bedding, bed cover and couch cover were rather worn. While I found the bed comfortable and slept well, my wife preferred sleeping on the couch (so, in hindsight, it wasn't that useless). Parking can get tight. The worst of all, however, is the 1 hour one way drive to Yosemite Village, which takes 2 hours out of your day.

I booked 3 nights in the Yosemite Bug this summer and it was very nice. We had a room in a cabin with a shared bathroom. Both were very clean and nicely decorated. The entrance was over a nice little terrace with chairs and a desk. It can get cold overnight though.

If you're lucky, your room will have Internet. If not, go to their lovely Café. Food was great there, though not cheap.

Yosemite Bug is situated on Hwy 140 which takes you also to Yosemite Park if you drive it all the way. The entrance to the park is about 25 miles from the Resort, which is no problem if you have a car. The nearest stores and gas stations are in Midpines and in Mariposa, only a short way by car.

Great, calm place to relax in a warm summer night.

I was a bit nervous about booking "the bug" having read reviews suggesting it was some sort of hippy commune. I need not have worried ! The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room/lodge was quite small and old fashioned but very clean and comfortable. The communal area (meals/games/drinks etc) reminded me of my old sixth form common room - except a lot cleaner. All the meals we had there were first class and inexpensive. The packed lunches were large and nutritious and again, very good value. The kids loved it and we will certainly book again if we're ever back in the area. It was about 40 mins to Yosemite national park by car which was a small price to pay not to have to tent up with the crowds on the valley floor.
