Dont be fooled by the name of The Bug, I had to be talked into staying here and I was definitely impressed. We had a private queen with shower and it felt like a hotel room, not a hostel. They clean the rooms everyday. The cafe onsite has amazing food at great prices. $6 avg breakfast. They make packed lunches for you to take on your hikes for $6. You will see many backpackers playing guitar by the campfire, which I think I nice. Also, I would ask ahead of time if you have anything against steep stairs, they do have rooms that seemed more accessible than others. This place is an hour to the west entrance of Yosemite.

The Bug is not for everyone, mostly those with starch in their shirt or undergarments. This place is a unique wonderful get away, I have been there numerous time for meals, stayed overnight for a wedding and lots more.
The ambiance is kicked back and causual with lots of young folks on adventures. They like dogs too.

This is not a spit polish , white table cloth , it is partially self serve, bring your own wine for a small corkage, love the food, great dishes of varying interest for a great price. 5 minutes down the road is the Merced river racing through a california poppy covered canyon on the way to Yosemite

I stayed here on my way to Yosemite. It was a very convenient location, the staff was very helpful and nice. I stayed in a female dorm. You can 't beat the price for $25. The bathrooms for the dorm rooms (hostel) are located down a set of stairs and are co-ed, but that didn't bother or impact me at all. The lodge to lounge in at night is cozy and comfortable. The food was excellent. The Chicken dish marinated in yogurt was the best chicken meal I have ever had. I drove into Yosemite the next morning which took me about an hour, but it is a great drive for the vistas and scenery. This isn't an upscale hotel, so if that is what you are looking for, pay more and stay somewhere else, but, if you are comfortable with a laid back atmosphere, this place is for you:)

We stayed here only one night. We enjoyed a massage and the spa was good. The restaurant was pricey and food was not very good. No hot water for a shower to be found. We paid a lot of money for a rustic room and couldn't get a hot shower. We were told that the hot water was there. In other words, we were wrong. Very doubtful we will return.

This is a review for the Starlite House and Mother-in-law unit on the Yosemite Bug property.

Traveling with a few families, we were looking for a cabin with enough beds and a kitchen that could accommodate our size and allow us to maximize our "together-time" while on vacation. What we got was (1) an in-law unit that was unusable to us due to a foul-odor which smelled like a dead animal and a broken water heater and (2) a cabin that had an ant infestation problem in the kitchen and mice leaving droppings underneath the bedcovers and on top of cookware in the kitchen cabinetry. "I wanna go home!" - that's what the children cried when they found mice droppings underneath the sheets of the daybed they were going to sleep on that night. We really did want to move to a cleaner and healthier living accommodation; however, knowing that we only had 3 days to spend at Yosemite NP, we didn't want to waste our precious time calling other rentals during our vacation time. Had we known that some of the problems that other travelers had faced while staying here such as the ant infestation and prevalence of mice within the house had STILL NOT BEEN TAKEN CARE OF by the management, we would have selected a different cabin rental which would have cost us more, but at least would have given us a more relaxing experience on our vacation.

When we informed the front office of the several inconveniences that we were facing at the Starlite House especially with the loss of use from the in-law unit, they did offer a private room that could accommodate 4 people within our group on their main property. We declined the offer because our group wanted to stay together. Probably realizing our frustrations with problems we were having at the cabin, someone from the front office did personally drive over to the Starlite House to check on us and address the current concerns. At check-out when we returned the keys to the cabin, the front office people did refund close to a third of our cost of staying there.

Improvements within the practices of the housekeeping staff should be considered since they were not very attentive to cleaning the linen during our stay: (1) they did not pick up the mice-soiled bed linens that we left in a pile on the kitchen floor for housekeeping to pick-up during their daily sweep of the house and (2) the cleanliness of the bath towels were suspect when one person found a blood-stain on one of the "newly-replaced" towels and (3) the kitchen towels had something (food remnant?) still stuck on them when we wanted to dry our own crockpots and cookware that we had brought from home to supplement what we would find at the Starlite House.

Our group made the most out of our 3 night stay at the Yosemite Bug; however would recommend that they focus more effort on cleaning up the Starlite House. Yes, we realize that the surroundings are rustic, but honestly speaking, our group has camped in even more rustic surroundings with fewer of the concerns that we encountered on this stay and spent a lot more money on lodging than if we had camped.

We stayed here on our trek around the West coast for 2 nights on our visit to Yosemite. After a long drive in the van, we arrived to warm dorm cabins with large bunk beds and comfy memory foam mattresses. We enjoyed our evenings spent in the dining room by the log fire playing games after a hearty dinner. The food was tasty, the portions were very generous and I felt it was good value for money. The cabin was ready for us all on arrival with clean bedding arranged nealty on the available beds and we had a locker under each bunk (whereby you need to have a padlock to secure your belongings - I was able to use my luggage padlock I had on my suitcase). Free wifi was quick and the staff we met in the dining room was friendly and helpful. Whilst we were there, we made use of the Spa and paid $10 for access to the Sauna, Hot tub and private hot full body showers. The cabin itself had 2 showers to use between the 12 of us of which 1 of them was only working properly hence the need to access the spa. Remember to put your check in slip on your bed clip to ensure any new guests arriving on the day you are out at the park identifying a free bed. Its located approx 50 min journey to the park but the drive is very scenic and theres lots to see on the way and back. Overall a fabulous stay at the Bug - definately recommend this for others visiting Yosemite.

Room Tip: The bug had Dorms and private cabins to stay in so would depend on your circumstances. We stayed in...

I have stayed at the Bug twice. Once in the hostel, then in a private cabin. Both were excellent. I love the Bug. The restaurant is great too!

It is pretty far from Yosemite. It's about an hour drive in and out of the park.
