Wow! De Angelo's moved (and Waze doesn't know it so our GPS took up to the old downtown location. Apparently there was a fire at the old location. Admittedly, I was disappointed, because the charm of De Angelo's WAS it's location -- a warm + cozy space that felt bustling and busy. The new location is a big, cold, open hotel restaurant (with prices to match). The food was good and the service was good, too, but the ambiance was sub-par. The menu is very limited -- heavy on the 8oz + cuts of beef. Alas, gone is a GREAT restaurant, replaced by an OKAY restaurant with over-priced food.

We happened upon De Angelo's in Merced on our way through town. We were surprised by the prices (rather high) for the formal restaurant so we decided to try the bistro instead. It was very reasonable and the food and service were both excellent. We shared the spinach lasagne and a pizza. Both were huge. The lasagne had great flavor but could have used a little more spinach. The pizza was a 12 inch (large for 1 person). I got the sausage and meatball version and it was very good.

We ate there last year. The food was better then most Italian restaurants in the Centeral Valley. Good value for the money.

Stayed in Merced during a recent road trip to Northern California and trusted the desk clerk's advice to try De Angelo's.
I had the most delicious Calamari Steak Dore I have ever had and I love Calamari ! It was thick, tender and done in an egg wash with a hint of lemon and served with perfectly cooked vegies and creamy mashed potatoes. My wife had ravioli filled with butternut squash and she couldn't stop raving about even 2 weeks later. Our waiter, Mark, was very helpful and didn't miss a thing.

One of the better places for dinner in Merced. Reasonable prices, good service, good but not great food. Menu dominated by pasta or heavy cream sauces more than, say, Tuscan cuisine would be. Within that genre, very good.
