For a good meal, nice portions, variety and consistency, this is the place! I've never had a poor meal and I've eaten at many of them from Porterville to Mt. Shasta. Always good!

Had to meet some coworkers for lunch in Merced, and after seeing some Tripadvisor reviews, we settled on Black Bear Diner since it was reviewed well and had easy freeway access. It was ok, but these high reviews did leave me with a sense of disappointment.
First, the facility. The building itself is newer and in good shape. The carpet was a funky green color that didn't age well, but whatever. What really, really bothered me was the lot. There was bird droppings and bird dropping stains EVERYWHERE. Not just under a tree or in certain spots, but EVERYWHERE. It's as if the birds dive bombed this place for fun. There was also a dead bird in the parking lot. As a clean freak, it was extremely disappointing to me, and it made me wonder if they cared so little about their lot, what does their kitchen look like?
The service was pretty good. When we walked in the lady asked us how she could help then seated us quickly. Our Server was polite and kept our drinks full. The one glaring fault was the final interaction between us and the staff - the paying of the bill. We walked up with our bill and waited while the gentlemen at the register talked with a coworker. That coworker had to tell him to turn around and help us. He rang us up and gave me the receipt to sign without once saying "hi" or "your total is XXXX". He then picked up a phone call, turned away from us and never even acknowledged us. I understand you needing to pick up the phone, but always take care of those in front of you - AND make sure you get your receipt signed. I could've taken off with it and charged them back - and they would be in a tough spot without my signature. It's just common business sense - and courtesy. Major fail.
The food was ok. I was expecting these huge portions - and got none of that. Someone ordered a burger, someone a French Dip and someone a "california" burger. Two orders of fries and a order of garlic fries. All three were average at best. The fries looked like they were cooked too long. The French dip was not a very lean cut (which it should be for french dip). None of us were super impressed with the food.
Overall, it was an ok experience, but I was disappointed since my expectations were sky high thanks to the reviews. If our hostess and server weren't so friendly and good at their jobs, this place would have been a major disappointment. All in all, it's average. Not bad, but definitely not great, and the serving sizes are no where near where people say they are. Claim Jumpers had huge portions. These portions are average at best, and this place is average at best.

We had breakfast there the other day and it was great with very large portions way more than I could eat. I'd say stop on by and check it out for yourself.

A new one of these opened and it has been slammed. But, with all the cars at the one in town, we still wanted to try a Black Bear Diner. We drove 1/2 hr to Merced. It was worth the drive. Nice place/ Decor. Friendly staff. Busy but not slammed. Despite the crowd, the service was pretty quick. Comparable to Denny's or Perko's. Access is a little limited due to street configuration. We will check out other BB Diners to see how they compare to this one.

This was my first opportunity to visit Black Bear Diner. I was there during the latter part of the lunch hour, somewhat after 1PM. Not a lot of customers at this hour.A very courteous staff person directed us to a nice booth. The first thing I noticed was the flat screen TV in clear view of our booth. It was tuned in to a news channel, not distracting at all.
The menu was printed on a newspaper. A little different, but easy to read. The server was patient and pleasant at the same time.

Really only 2 "minor"objections..........The menu said "free" refills. I wish the server had asked me if I would like a refill. Also, my sandwich would have tasted a lot better had it been toasted.
I just assumed it came that way. My friends' came toasted. I'll just have to remember to ask next time.

Plenty of parking and the restrooms as well as the the rest of the restaurant was clean. Also, easy access to HWY 99.
