We have stayed at the Red Cottage Inn three times. It is not luxurious, but it's a comfortable and above-average motel. Well behaved dogs are allowed for a $75 flat fee. The management is very responsible and responsive, and the location and parking are easy. There are some nice amenities like the pool and (new this year) Smith and Hawken outdoor furniture in the public areas.

We have stayed here at least four times during the past five years. We especially enjoy the bountiful complimentary breakfast and that the Inn is set in from the road with flowers throughout. Our second floor room had a queen size bed equipped with microwave, refrigerator,TV, and opened onto a small deck overlooking the good sized pool in a cozy closed off area. Recently updated. The staff is very friendly and helpful. . Everything is neat and clean.

This is a basic hotel, and it's clean. But it's noisy, the A/C doesn't work well, and it has the most confusing TV system I've run into. I prefer the Holiday Inn Express just up the road in Redwood City - quieter and about the same price, with a slightly nicer breakfast.

My colleagues, family, and I have been staying at the Red Cottage Inn & Suites since the 1970s. The hotel and its service continues to be of the highest quality. It is always a pleasure to return to the Red Cottage. I would strongly recommend the hotel to others.

This is a wonderful little motel that's been recently renovated to perfection. The owners are attentive to every detail. Our room has a private patio/deck complete with plantings, a micro and fridge in room, flat screen TV, fully remodeled bathroom, great wireless internet and electronic plugs conveniently located for working. The motel is set back of El Camino Real, so it's way quieter than other motels/hotels in the area. It's an easy walk to downtown Menlo Park and about 35-40 minute walk to Stanford Shopping Center.

This isn't a luxury resort; just a wonderful independent motel with nicely appointed rooms at a good price point.

The longest I've ever stayed in one hotel (6 nights). I don't think it lives up to the hype on TripAdvisor. On the plus side, breakfast, parking, and wireless are all free, and it's a good value for the area. The place as a whole is cute and has some character, and the free room treats (granola bar, chips, water) are a nice touch. Staff responded pretty quickly to various issues I raised, though in general they seemed rather tired and distracted instead of focused on delivering a great experience for the customer. The major con for this hotel is that it's located very close to the Caltrain tracks. I thought this would be a good thing since I wanted access to the Caltrain station, but the train operators insist on leaning on their horns at all hours of the day and evening (especially since many bypass the Menlo Park and Atherton stations), which makes it hard to relax and sometimes even sleep. (The sound insulation in the rooms leaves something to be desired as well.) I found my room cramped and hard to work in; the swivel desk chair was uncomfortable and looked like it was 20 years old. The TV was flaky and sometimes took several tries to get it to turn on (despite using the exact same steps each time). The bed became comfortable eventually, but only after I had slept in it for three nights and imprinted my body shape in the mattress. My bath mat went missing mysteriously for about 36 hours and I had to ask for it be returned. Oh, and as someone else mentioned, there's no hint of environmental awareness (let us know if you don't want your sheets/towels cleaned, etc.), which I found odd for this area.

Overall, it was a decent enough place to stay, especially if your budget is limited, but I imagine one could do better.
