Hill House Inn
Ranked #18 of 25 Mendocino B&B and Inns
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Our recent stay at the Hill House was fairly good with a few exceptions. The bed and pillows in our room were very uncomfortable and gave me a neck ache. The building could use some much needed maintenance as the salt air and wear and tear are apparently taking their toll. We had an ocean view room with balcony and the view was nice but not exceptional. I felt the rooms are overpriced for what they actually are.

Also my wife had this complaint: The hotel has a lot of nice features, but needs to either have a full operating restaurant or a shuttle service that takes you into town for it's guest, as it is a little walk to town and makes it an inconvenience if you plan to dress up for dinner and wear nice dress shoes. Which are not always comfortable to walk a long distance.

The service was good though and your people very pleasant and helpful. You could really use a restaurant close by or on site.

Room Tip: Rooms with ocean view and balcony are the best choice at this Inn.

Grounds and location are nice but the Inn needs some T.L.C.
because of the location and area it's not going to happen because they can get top dollar without any improvements.
The breakfast was good ,nice comfy dining room cozy fireplace.
Rooms could use new beds ,mattresses ,linen ,and Bedspreads.

I stayed 2 nights with a good friend and we both had the best, quiet, and restful sleep ever! I was glad I paid a little extra for the balcony room with a great ocean view. The room was large with extra places to sit. The decor matches the antiques in the room, like from the early 1900's.
The faux log gas heater really took the chill off the room, too. And with the fog, Mendocino can often be chilly! We made good use of the 15% dining discount offered at their sister hotel, The Mendocino Hotel. The trip into town was an easy walk with an off-road path. Only thing not so good was the breakfast; coffee was good but not much else I could eat. Yogurt would have been nice. I'm sure others enjoyed the make your own waffles. This was a great place to stay!

Room Tip: Consider paying extra for the large king room with balcony, ocean view, and log heater. It was so pl...

We enjoy hearing that our peaceful and beautiful property was just the ticket for a relaxing stay. Mendocino is a wonderful place to experience that "down home" welcoming feeling that the staff members that we hire provide. These are not actors but real caring folks that truly care about our guests.

Late evening check in on a road trip. The front desk was warm and accommodating. dog friendly rooms were available. It was a quick walk to town were Patterson pub allowed us a late night meal. Not much open late in Mendocino. The room was large and spacious. Pull out couch bed was really uncomfortable, but king bed and pillow perfect. Sits on hill above the town and the morning fog made a lovely morning. Breakfast needed some help, more gluten free choices, and better coffee!,

Room Tip: Ask for view.

Welcoming road weary guests are our specialty, providing comfortable accommodations is our main concern. We do have some rooms with two double beds if a sofa bed does not fit the bill. True that late night dining is harder to provide and Patterson's is a wonderful place with late hours and we also give all of our guests 15% off dining at our beautiful sister property The Mendocino Hotel. Guests rave about their dining experience there!

We visited the Hill House Inn with a Groupon. We were kind of problem guests; we scheduled and canceled and rescheduled our Mendocino trip three or four times. Kudos to the staff for being patient with us. We did not have high expectations when we arrived, so I suppose we did not need much to be satisfied. It's not the Ritz-Carlton, but it's a well-maintained, historic looking building in a good location, an easy walk to the charming town. The guest room furnishings are a little dated, but they're spacious and clean. Best of all, they offer free wi fi (greatly appreciated, as cellular coverage is really spotty up there). The staff were all pleasant, friendly and very accommodating. The continental breakfast was a little bit sparse, but the coffee was quite good and we enjoyed making our own waffles. All in all, we would happily return the next time we visit Mendocino.

Location is great. The hotel is easy access to just about anything. Service is great until 9pm. After that, you are pretty much on your own until the next morning. Good continental breakfast. Room looks old and dated.

Room Tip: Room with an ocean view.
