“To B&B or not to B&B !!!”
Reviewed April 17, 2013

I love the Hill house inn !! I love having the feel of the quaint B&B, but with all the privacy of a hotel,( private bathroom, balcony, phone and TV.) after all having a "romantic" weekend with your honey is not as romantic when you think your neighbors or host can hear you ;). The Hill house offers so much more than a typical B&B does but with some of the same great amenities, such as a warm fireplace to read by, a yummy fresh Belgian waffle continental breakfast ( at your leisure, no pressure to be seated and eat what your served) surrounded by beautiful gardens, and a lovely staff who are all friendly and willing to help without question. the location offers you quick access to downtown but is set aside from the main streets so you have a nice quiet place to relax ! I can't wait till I can return! whether you are traveling solo, with pets, as a couple or as a whole family this is a great place to stay

Room Tip: 201 has the jacuzzi tub

We've stayed at the Hill House Inn many times and always find the rooms comfortable and clean, with lovely furnishings in keeping with the decor and atmosphere of the Inn. The breakfast is quite generous. The Inn is very convenient, within walking distance of the town and has plenty of parking. Some rooms have sea views and open fires.

Management at Hill House is excited to hear that our décor and location "fit the bill" for a wonderful relaxing getaway. Close to town, no need to hunt for a parking spot, walking to town or on longer trip around the headlands is a wonderful way to spend time here in Mendocino.

The desk clerk was very nice when we checked in. The hotel sits on beautiful grounds in a great location close to the town and walking distance to restaurants, grocery store, shops and ocean. Rooms are large and clean but could use an upgrade to a larger TV. Great deal through groupon. At that price we will surely return.

Room Tip: You may want to ask for ocean view, balcony or patio.

Only stayed 2 nights but were quite impressed with the congeniality of the staff and the quality of the food as well as the comfort of the inn. We happened to arrive on a night when room service was offered at no cost and took advantage of the opportunity to eat in our room. Great meal and served quickly. There was live music as entertainment both nights we were there but we understand that may not always be the case. Call ahead if interested in such. The breakfast was limited to waffles, bagels and bananas with coffee and juice but it was quite adequate for our needs.

Our chef is extremely happy to hear that this guest enjoyed their room service during their stay. The Hill House grounds are starting to bloom now and we hope that this guest will have the opportunity to revisit us during a different season.

We went on a travelzoo offer for $199.00 for two night stay including Internet and continental breakfast.
The place is rundown and needs a facelift badly. The one person who runs check in, all calls and reservations and breakfast . Impossible situation for staff and guests.
Internet working? Who knows?

My husband and I had a wonderful weekend! Close to dining, shopping and beaches.
We ate at the Mendocino Inn Friday and Saturday night and everything was excellent.
Our room was so quiet and restful. We enjoyed the fireplace both nights. Breakfast was nice.
We will be returning soon.

My husband and I just needed a couple of quiet days away from home after a hectic holiday. I didn't want to go far, so the 3-hour drive to Mendocino seemed doable. When I looked for a place to stay, however, the prices made me think twice. Then I found a Groupon for the Hill House Inn. We hadn't stayed there before, but we knew where it was, and of course it has that kitschy reputation as the location for scenes from the old show Murder She Wrote. So, we decided to give it a try.

The front desk was pleasant and efficient and we were checked into our little "garden" room fairly quickly. It was nothing to write home about, but it was clean and everything worked. They even included a bottle of wine and two real wine glasses, which was nice. Not too many TV channels, but a strong WiFi connection gave us access to Netflix on our iPad, and a comfortable bed gave us a good night's sleep.

Breakfast the next morning was, well, a nice try. They had two of those waffle makers but neglected to tell us you had to spray them with cooking spray, which was hidden. My husband spent several embarrassing minutes trying to scrape his off the machine with the attendant just looking on. There were apples and bananas, and bread and a toaster, in case you needed more carbs with that waffle. Oh, and some hard-boiled eggs. Like I said, it was a nice try.

The best thing about the hotel is its location. The town of Mendocino with all its cute little shops and restaurants and such are just a 5-minute walk down the hill. It was easy to pretty much hit all our favorites on Saturday. The good news and the bad news is that the retailers have had a slow season. That means there were some good sales and small crowds, but they're definitely hurting a little. One shop owner said he went two weeks without a single person walking through his door. Ouch.

Sunday we strolled along the bluffs and ate breakfast at a hotel ... not this one. Then leisurely headed home. Overall the stay was lovely. The gardens were nicely cared for, the room was clean and comfortable, and the staff was friendly and efficient. Just what we were looking for in a little getaway not far from home. I would recommend a stay here, and I'd recommend that other hotels and B&Bs in the area, all of which had "vacancy" signs that weekend, try offering a Groupon themselves. Maybe business would pick up a little for everyone.

Room Tip: If you're staying longer than a weekend or really want an ocean view, they have rooms on the sec...
