Like at least one other person posting here, we had to make last minute plans due to the NPS shutdown. Mendocino was recommended by family and friends, and due to TripAdvisor we found Stanford Inn by the Sea. First rate in all regards! Among many highlights: vegan breakfast and dinner (and I did not come here as an experienced vegan), nutrition counseling with Sid (constructive and not coercive/exclusionary), tai chi (we're novices, but felt welcome), easy hikes, and wood fires in our room and throughout. We will be back.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Cypress Suite -- very nice.

Loved it. My husband and I were turned away from National Parks due to the government shutdown. Mendocino was as good as or better than any national park .. seriously. We are meat eaters, but the onsite vegan restaurant ( we ate 3 meals in 2 days) made me want to become a vegan. We took advantage of the free bike rental and rode 15 miles on a flat trail one day, we rented kayaks, and I took a fabulous yoga class. The room smelled a teensy bit musty, and the bed was only a 4/5 .. but my biggest disappointment was that they were sold out and we couldn't extend our stay.
The drive is 14 hours from my home but I want to go back! Of course, the weather was perfect so that may have influence my rave reviews...

Monica

Room Tip: I think all the rooms have decks ,, which are divine

We love this place. It is beautiful and welcoming. In fact, we usually do not leave once we arrive with our dogs...well, poodles.Well behaved dogs are allowed in the lobby where you can request your meals to be served. The restaurant, Raven, is vegan. We are not, but the food is so delicious that we prefer to eat there. Note that eggs are served in the morning as a response to guest requests. You may want to have extra 1/2 & 1/2 for your coffee, in case they run out. The grounds are alive with the spirit of nature and it is fun to walk around and appreciate the beauty. Regardless of the weather, it is wonderful to sit in front of the fireplace with your loving friend at your feet sipping some great local wine or herbal tea. We have visited as a couple, family and solo.

Thank you so much for writing! We just love welcoming your returner back again, and again. So much fun to see familiar faces here. Just a quick update on the breakfast: Ravens' has gone 100% vegan, so we no longer have eggs or dairy available. However, there are lots of palate-pleasing alternatives :) Thanks again for sharing your experience with us, and we look forward to seeing you again! All our best to you and your family.

Mendocino is a magical place to visit, made even more so by a stay at Stanford by the Sea. Llamas in the front yard, kayaks awaiting for one down by the river. Superb rooms and overall furnishings, a lovely indoor pool sauna area for those misty Northern California mornings. Just a great place. We love the fire in the room............... Just the best!

My husband and I recently enjoyed 5 fabulous nights at this amazing inn which is even more lovely than the beautiful pictures on line! Our expectations were exceeded in every way! We loved the gorgeous gardens and beautiful views, including the sunsets, ocean and stars right from our room, which was truly cozy and romantic with wood burning fireplace and a really comfortable bed, too!
The amenities are top notch and the surroundings are all very well maintained and upscale while still offering a very laid back feel! We loved the sumptuous breakfasts and artistically presented dinners, as well as tea time with a different dessert each day! Views from the dining room are also magnificent and the reception/common area has a delightful gift shop and plenty of space to unwind by the fire.
Enjoyed wonderful yoga classes, massage in the forest and the huge pool which is in a greenhouse setting.
We came for the vegan food and to visit the nearby redwoods which were magnificent and were surprised how we were able to really relax and get away from it all in this short period of time. We both felt completely renewed upon leaving. Such a perfect anniversary trip! Highly recommend this inn!

Most definitely one of the highlights of our recent 2 week road trip was a 4 night stay at the Stanford Inn. We stayed in one of the Big River Executive King Rooms second floor, and it was perfect. Great view of the ocean and the grounds from a spacious balcony. Loved the real wood burning fireplace and the ample supply of chopped wood and kindling just outside the door. Bed was very comfortable and always got a great nights sleep. Room was nicely appointed and visual appealing in every way. But, as with any piece of real estate . . . the real value is always, location, location, location . . . and Stanford has it. The grounds, with so many beautiful plants along with the beautiful barn and always out to pasture horses, donkeys and lamas was so unique and fun. Mornings would greet you with the sound of Ravens and the smell of Redwood. Then off to the Solarium for a swim, hot tub and shower. I'm a swimmer, and it was so unusual to have a pool at an inn with actual lines on the bottom to swim laps . . . and never have I had flower petals fall on me as I swam! Really, the solarium was a big surprise and we loved going there every morning! In the evenings, we loved dining at the Ravens restaurant where the meals were so unique and delicious. Also ate breakfast there every morning and were amazed that this was included with the price of the room. Seriously, this is the best breakfast you will every have as an included item with the price of the room. We also took a private nutritional consultation from Sid Garza-Hillmam and he was instrumental in bringing us to to a better understanding of the changes we could make in our eating habits to live better. Neither of us have eaten dairy since, and the difference in how we feel has been significant. Very friendly staff and service people throughout the complex and oh yea . . . we had our dog with us, and he LOVED it there. There could not possibly be a more accommodating inn for pets. We loved this place and could have easily stayed longer!

Room Tip: All rooms are good, but the second floor will give you better view of the ocean.

We spent 3 days and the room was very nice. Wood burning fireplace was great every night! The reservations did not get the correct room and the staff id their best to accommodate. The pool and hot tub is nice as well. Even thought the place was full on the weekend, we had both to ourselves every time we used them. The breakfast was good every day but they are totally vegan so we ate dinner out at the local restaurants which are very good as well. Seafood is best up in Fort Bragg (8 miles north). Our room included bikes and the grounds and general area is nice ( large garden and river next door). We walked, biked and rented canoes to go up river from the hotel. Very relaxing place.

Room Tip: All rooms were good, but 2nd floor farther from the lodge seemed better.
