For our fifth year in a row, we stayed at the Sea Gull Inn. Each time we have tried a different room and have enjoyed each one. This time we shared the Barn with friends and had a fabulous time. Although this room comes with a TV and movies, we never turned it on! We have always enjoyed our time with Jim and Ayla and this time was no exception. One night they joined us (Sparky and Sophie too) and we shared wine and stories until late into the evening. We love the location and the garden setting. Jim and Ayla most definitely go out of their way to may your stay the best it could be. They have lots of info about the local places and can always recommend a place to eat or to go should you need advice. The breakfasts just keep getting better. It is usually a lot more than I can eat (that's where the hubby comes in). We have already reserved our time for next year!

My hubby and I stayed here two nights during the annual Whale Festival. We were in the Sea Urchin room, which indeed is very small but was fine for our needs. Yes, as another reviewer noted, the bed is pushed against the wall so that is something to consider before reserving this room - how agile are you to crawl across the bed so to not disturb your partner if you are sleeping on the wall side and need to get up in the middle of the night? The ceilings at the sides of the room are low. I kept bumping my head when I reached for the towel bar in the bathroom. The shower head was a bit odd but there was plenty of water and water pressure to rinse my hair when I washed it. My only complaint about the bathroom is there is only one tiny shelf to put toiletries. This inn is in an old building so it is not a sleek, modern, place though it has its charms. The cafe next door has a fan or other machinery that can be heard if the window is open, so that could bother you if you have the window open at night.

The hosts were gracious and helpful and the breakfasts were fantastic. I've had scones before at an English-style tea room and they were like heavy biscuits but the scones we had for one of the breakfasts were so light they practically floated off the plate.

We had a great stay and are definitely coming back!

What a treat! Our hosts were so nice and the breakfasts -WOW! I never knew that eating organic could taste so good! The rooms are very comfy and really relaxing. No T.V. , phone or alarm clock. Now that is a vacation! Our cell phones worked just fine but, we decided to turn them off anyway just not to spoil the perfection of being there. This place is located next to everything you could possibly want. Pizza and Mendocino chocolate are just behind this great place and there is Mendocino cafe on the corner next door if you want a nice dinner. Great view from lookout room 1 . Bring a good book or pick one of theirs. They have a little library and games to choose from if you do have any time that you actually spend there. Out of all of our travels this is in my top two. We were there for Feb13-16th and it rained the entire time. It was still lovely and wouldn't trade it for anything. Check out the attached pictures to really get a feel for this little gem. If you go, you won't regret it!

OK, full disclosure: I have known the proprietors of the Sea Gull Inn for a long time. They're good friends of mine. That said, I hope to give an honest review.

The Sea Gull Inn is a charming old place on a quiet side street in downtown Mendocino. Our trip involved a group of four families all staying there and it was a great place for such a gathering. The kids all stayed in "The Barn" - a larger two-story building with plenty of room for the of seven of them. My wife and I were in "Driftwood", a brightly decorated room with a queen bed and a twin. All rooms have private baths, and ours was nicely appointed. Decor is eclectic - our room had a number of old photos on the wall as well as some prints done by Ayla (who along with her husband Jim own the inn). The rooms surround an absolutely gorgeous garden that makes a great place for a picnic-style lunch on a nice day. Breakfast at the Sea Gull is served in your room - there is no dining room or sitting room. (This is good for those of you who like the bed-and-breakfast experience but aren't fond of making conversations with strangers over your morning coffee.) Breakfasts are made by Ayla and include items like homemade scones, frittatta, etc. The inn is on a quiet side street off of one of the main downtown roads, so you're right near the shopping, restaurants, and ocean. Prices at the Sea Gull are very reasonable for Mendocino. I didn't do any comparisons but I would guess that they're among the least expensive inns in town. This makes the place a heck of a value. If you're looking for a really plush, luxury experience (and don't mind dropping the cash for it) then I'd recommend going to the MacCallum House. But if you want a bright, clean, comfortable room in a quiet, romantic inn with a tasty breakfast and really friendly proprietors, I don't think you'll do better than the Sea Gull Inn.

A wonderful, very original "old Mendocino" delight. Cozy, quaint, clean, and charming. Located very conveniently in a quiet spot, yet close to the sea. Good value for the money, too....a real factor these days where a night at a coastal B&B is starting to cost more than a fancy Nob Hill 5 star hotel! Well, phooey on that- not the case here! Somehow, that made me enjoy our stay all the more...and left more money to spend on local fine dining and wine. We'll be back.

We had a very nice stay at the Inn. Given that it was the New Year weekend we were fortunate to get accommodation. We had Lookout Room #1, which was quiet and warm. Our next door neighbors were quiet - we could hear them a little but not too intrusive. The bathroom is small and cold unless you leave the sliding door open to the bedroom to heat up. The windows have rollblinds as curtains, which keeps out some light at nighttime, but unfortunately the Inn signpost illumination lights can be a problem being turned on all night - some light sneeks into the bedroom and can keep sensitive sleepers awake. Would recommend better lightproof blinds/curtains.
The bed and pillows are very comfortable. The breakfast is delicious, comprising organically grown fruits, yogurt, and a freshly baked muffin/scone or similar, all delivered to your room at a time you select.
As we visited in Dec/Jan the town was surprisingly quiet for New Year. Several of the hotels/restaurants/businesses close in January for a few weeks or more. Be aware of this - perhaps you may prefer the peace and quiet. Also, the roads in the area are very twisty - take them slowly and your car-sickness will be minimized.
We would happily return to this Inn - the owners are very helpful and offering of local information and tips. The coastline is unforgettable and the forests/wineries and local artists are excellent.

Having lived in the town of Mendocino during the 70s, I've seen a lot of B and Bs come and go. There's never been a more consistently warm, welcoming and comfortable place than the Sea Gull.
You can expect a delicious breakfast in bed with your sweetie while the rain pours down, the gulls cry and the sea roils just outside your window. Or you can simply get back to the relaxed person/people you used to be while Jim and Ayla look after your creature comforts and make you feel at home.
There's nothing pretentious here--just a long legacy of small town charm at unbeatable value. Which is why we've been coming back for 30+ years.
