“Chef is very accommodating and food is excellent”

Mendocino Oysters is a must. Salad is fresh. Pasta can be made to your liking. I gave them gluten free pasta and I asked the chef to make me pasta with garlic prawns. They were delicious.

“Lovely Room But Average Food”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

The Mendocino Hotel is a classic western Victorian hotel with multiple bars and dining options. Top end dining is in the Victorian dining room, an attractive setting full of period furnishings. The good news stops with the setting because the kitchen's attempts at fine dining are flawed. A dungeness crab bisque had little flavor save for some sherry. The classic French onion soup was barely better, a thick layer of cheese over loads of bread with little onion and a weak stock. Entrees were a step up, the highlight being a bouillabaisse with a flavorful sauce and respectable amount of shrimp, clams, mussels, and fish. Sliced duck breast was nicely cooked and served with red cabbage. A well braised tender, boneless short rib would could have been improved by losing the vanilla flavoring in the sauce. This is more of unique place to dine versus a fine dining experience.

“Excellent for lunch and dinner”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

This is really two facilities, the Garden Room which is open for lunch (and maybe dinner) and the Victorian Dining Room which is open for dinner. Both are excellent. The lunch menu is very complete and varied and in our many visits has provided us with excellent food. The dinner menu in the Victorian Dining Room is a bit shorter but, on our most recent visit in July 2013, featured a very fine preparation of wild salmon and absolutely the most attentive and knowledgeable service in a very impressive but comfortable atmosphere.

“Good lunch spot, interesting hotel”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

We had a good lunch at the Mendocino Hotel while spending a day in Mendocino. We had a bit of a wait, but that gave us time to explore the very interesting Victorian hotel. The food and service were quite good.

“Excellent Dinner”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

We ate dinner here twice during our stay in Mendocino. We had reservations for the dining room, but decided we preferred to eat at a window table in the bar area that afforded a stunning view of the ocean and cliffs, lovely. A short wait with a glass of wine proved pleasant. We loved the bouillabaisse and the fresh fish specials, which were swordfish and wild salmon. The warm spinach and bacon salad was delightful, and the crab bisque was delicious. We were treated in an attentive and friendly way by the staff. We highly recommend it.
