Fantastic lunch of fresh nettle soup, beautiful juicy succulent burgers with avocado and mushrooms, crab cakes eggs Benedict. The breads, served from their bakery next door with sweet butter was divine. Excellent desserts and fresh homemade ice cream. This is well worth the visit. Will come back for sure.

This is not the Cafe Beaujolais of old, although the reviews might lead you to believe it is. Service was no better than what you might find at any "tourist" haunt, the menu was unimaginative and hardly worthy of prices or surroundings. Truly a disappointment.

In the past month we have been to Cafe Beaujolais 3 times (after good experiences in 2011). Each time we experienced very good cuisine and generally excellent service. We are "long duration" diners and never had anyone ask us to move along as another reviewer noted. Appetizers we enjoyed we're a special gazpacho with crab meat, and a seared ahi tuna plate that was outstanding. Dungeness crab cakes were a little disappointing, lacking the flavor we typically get in blue crab cakes. Also a special of steak tartare was good but needed some more seasoning. Excellent entrees included sliced duck breast and duck leg confit served with tasty spaetzel. A sliced lamb loin was perfectly cooked and mild, and a menu highlight is roasted California sturgeon, a real treat. On the dessert end, coconut cream pie was a surprising standout. The strawberry rhubarb crumble was a bit wet and was thin on the "crumble.". Chocolate lava cake was tasty but was overcooked on two efforts, so no "lava" flowed. Except for one snarky server we found everyone else friendly and fun. still the best choice in Mendocino.

For the first time ever at a French restaurant, we were told that "the next group has arrived and could we please wrap it up?" We had arrived at 6pm, were served by 6:50pm or so, dessert and coffee by 7:40, paid at 7:50pm, and asked to move along at 7:55pm. This after paying $380. for 4 people (including a 20% tip.) Ouch! This is just not how French restaurants are supposed to work, where a little bit of lingering is "de rigueur." But on a Saturday night in Mendocino, with the rich tourists lined up, they don't care.

To be fair, the food was excellent, though at $95 per head it should be. The same meal in the Bay Area would go for more like $60 or $65, so it's overpriced, but this is a cutesie tourist town. The setting was pretty typical high-end French, with white-tableclothed tables crowded in to one small open area. The crowd was old and boring -- mostly monied San Francisco types -- so the people watching was weak. So five stars for the food, minus one for being boring, minus one for the send-off.

Our next evening we ate at Patterson's Pub, just around the corner on Lansing. The food was very good, for a much more reasonable price, and the crowd was far more lively, and interestingly far more local. Do yourself a favor: save the high-end French thing for a worthy restaurant in your own town, and dine at Pattersons. You'll save big bucks, and have a better time.

A lovely dinner at Cafe Beaujolis.

Plus:
Wonderfully prepared and delicious food
Nice wine list
Lovely gardens
Pretty good service
Minus:
Too many tables crowded into the dining room, I felt like we were dining with 20 of our closest friends, except I only knew one other person
No one who knew the wine list and could offer recommendations.

Overall: A very lovely evening. We look forward to returning soon. Highly recommend.
