We have eaten nearly everywhere near Mendocino, but for one reason or another never made it to Cafe Beaujolais. This trip we finally went and it was fantastic.

We often eat at the Albion River Inn or 955 Ukiah. But the Cafe Beaujolais was ever bit if not better than those outstanding places. Highly recommend.

We have been coming here for years and it has never disappointed us. The service is attentive. the menu broad and the wine list is out of this world. Even wines like Dumol, that can only be purchased from their club are available here and with out a vast markup.

As a general observation, restaurants in destination locations often get lazy. Imagine, you have driven five hours on a winding coastal road, arriving at a scenic village with the ocean on one side and redwood forest on the other. Add peace, tranquility, and a general laid-back vibe and you have the ingredients for a perfect weekend retreat. Moving on to the potentially pleasurable business of where to go for dinner, the possibilities themselves tantalize. This is, after all, coastal California. Fish, oysters, mushrooms, beef, lamb--they should be plentiful and fresh. Alas, such is not always the case. The restaurants, it seems, have a captive audience, thus allowing them to cut corners. Were the restaurateurs in a community with more robust competition, they would necessarily be compelled to do better. Fortunately, there are exceptions to this general tendency and Cafe Beaujolais is one of those exceptions. It's a charming place. The staff is appropriately friendly. The wine list is great--lots of local Alexander Valley selections. The entrees were very good. Duck breast with confit, lamb shanks served on a bed of flavorful risotto--nice. Prices? Well, did you really think Mendocino is where you go for cheap stuff?

We had a nice dinner there. They were very accommodating for our dietary challenges. Service was good. The food only above average.

Believe the reviews. This is a restaurant that would not only survive but thrive anywhere, and it's just a treat to find it in the lovely Mendocino setting.

Crab cakes are award winning and you should do yourself the favour of finding out why. They are awesome!
