“BGCI - Exceptional Place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 18, 2014

We recently had the good fortune to spend a couple of days at the Brewery Gulch Inn in Mendocino County. The Inn is right on the coast with a beautiful view of a quiet cove. Our room was spacious and comfortable. All the service staff were kind and helpful, leaving us to enjoy the view and our entire trip when it was obvious we did not need any help; and being right there if we did require assistance.

The food was wonderful as was the companionship of those we met and dined with. No one will remain a stranger for long in this unique setting. Our host, Guy, was the picture of what a guest residence manager/owner should be.

Our recommendation is given to all who desire a quiet beautiful place to relax away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Room Tip: Stay in the second floor. You avoid the footsteps/noise of being in the ground floor.

The Inn is located just south of Mendocino, with about a 5 minute drive up the highway to town. The Inn itself is nice and clear with good views of the ocean from many of the rooms. The breakfast is excellent, with "Millionaire's Bacon" being the show-stopper. They also serve a pre-dinner meal, which honestly could be substituted for dinner. It was excellent, too, using fresh local ingredients. The only thing keeping the place from five stars is the room we had. We were on the first floor next to the dining area, and the walls were far too thin. From early hours we could hear the staff preparing for breakfast. We could also hear the guests above us. Those rooms also lack privacy, as people can see in from the common porch. Yet, the room we had was still quite expensive. I should also note that there was no staff after a certain hour, which was fine in Mendocino but might bother some people from a security standpoint.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of your May 2013 stay on TripAdvisor. I am glad that you enjoyed our location, our views out over Smuggler's Cove and most of all, our food. We try very hard to provide an exceptional experience for our guests.

I noted that during your stay, you experienced issues with noise from the guests above, and from the kitchen.. Since your stay in 2013, we have replaced the carpeting in the rooms on the second floor and added a layer of sound-proofing material beneath the carpet pads. Hopefully, on your next visit, you will no longer find this to be an issue.

The room you stayed in, Pine, is also located across from our kitchen and although our serving staff tries to be as quiet as possible, this room may still pick up some sounds as the kitchen gets going in the morning. I apologize for this. It is one of the reasons that this room is priced at a lower rate than our other rooms with two-person tubs.

When we take reservations over the phone, we try to discuss the pros and cons of room choices with potential guests so we can help them choose the room that best meets their needs. When discussing Pine with a potential guest, we will usually let the guest know about its location relative to the kitchen so that they can make an informed decision based on whether they like to sleep in, or rise early. Unfortunately, I saw that your reservation was booked on line, so we didn't have the opportunity to help you choose your room.

When you visit again, I would suggest either a second floor or loft-level room to alleviate any concerns for privacy and to ensure that you would have no one overhead.

Best wishes, Guy

'Lookout' had a great view yet you could hear the traffic from the highway.
Afternoon wine hour and breakfast very delicious.
Friendly personnel.
Surrounding of the house, especially entrance area was not well taken care of.

Thank you for taking the time to review your August 2013 stay with us. I am glad that you enjoyed your view and our food, and that you found our staff to be friendly. I will be sure to share your kind words with our innkeepers, housekeepers and food service staff.

I am sorry that you did not feel that the gardens surrounding the Inn were well taken care of. At the time you visited, we were in the midst of a severe drought. Most properties in the Mendocino area were forced to purchase water to continue operations. Although we have two deep and excellent wells, we made the decision to turn off irrigation to our landscaping to ensure that we would have an adequate water supply for our guests. By implementing this and other internal conservation measures, and with the support of our guests, we were able to continue providing our well water throughout the summer.

You also mentioned that you could hear traffic from the highway. Although we are set back on a bluff-top more than 1,000 feet from Highway 1, it is possible to hear cars, especially when the fog rolls in in late July and August. Fortunately, there is very little traffic between 9:00 at night and 9:00 in the morning. I am sorry that your stay was disturbed by this.

I hope the next time you travel to the U.S. and Northern California, you will stop by to visit us again. Best wishes, Guy

This inn was one of three on a recent anniversary trip to California, and by far the least satisfactory and most expensive.

Usually Trip Advisor reviews are pretty reliable, but in this case I found myself wishing I'd read the lowest ranked reviews more carefully. Checking after the fact, all of my complaints are repetitions of what others said. I just let myself be compelled by the glowing reviews, whose origin I now question.

Although the breakfast was excellent and the wine hour was good, food is the second part of "bed and breakfast." That just isn't enough in my book to make up for failing at the primary task for a B&B - the room. Yes, it looked nice in the photos, but it was super noisy. I knew we were in trouble as soon as I saw it was essentially right off the hard surfaced lobby.

I could track my husband by ear from the front door to the room door to let him in, as he rolled in our luggage. We could hear everything going on near us, including the cleaning and kitchen staff who were right next door and the diners during breakfast and hors d'oeuvres. Every step of the people above us was loud and clear, as were their normal conversations, bathroom activities, and late night sex scenes. Despite management's replies to previous comments that this is a matter of inconsiderate guests, I think church mice would have trouble being silent in this establishment. Even their guest book mentions that "sound carries" there and suggests that all conversations be kept low.

Beyond that, the bed itself was creaky and uncomfortable (also a previous comment here). I woke up with a backache both mornings.

The price tag clearly indicates the inn thinks itself a much higher end B&B, but the ambiance just doesn't compare. After expecting that this would be the best place we'd stay on our trip, I was surprised to park in front of long stacks of firewood and a parked motorboat, to enter the front door and be immediately greeted by racks of sweatshirts and robes for sale, and to be located 15 feet from the main lobby down an echoing hallway with staff areas adjacent.

It's been a long time since I felt ripped off this much. I can't believe we paid this price for such an unpleasant experience. We were so relieved to move onto our next stop!

While I would have appreciated if this reviewer had shared her concerns with either myself or any of our staff during her stay, I understand that some guests are uncomfortable doing so. Unfortunately, this prevents innkeepers from correcting a situation so that the guest has the type of experience they were expecting. Had we known that this guest was experiencing issues with noise, we would have offered to move her to a different room. If that would not have been acceptable, we would have offered to secure lodging for the guest at another property of her choice and adjusted her payments accordingly. Our highest priority is ensuring a positive experience for our guests.

I strongly encourage travelers considering a stay at our inn to read a representative selection of our reviews, to weigh the comments accordingly and to call the inn and discuss your interests. We would be happy to address any concerns you have and to help you find the room that best fits your criteria. While all of our rooms face the ocean, the view of the ocean improves as you move from the first floor to the second floor and from the second floor to the loft level. And although our inn was constructed in 2001 and as a result, has significantly better insulation and noise suppression than many buildings in the area that were constructed 50 or more years ago, we are still a stick-built building and not a large concrete hotel structure. The rooms on the second floor and loft level, by virtue of the fact that there are no rooms above them, will not be affected by people walking overhead, etc.

I am truly sorry that this guest found that the bed in her room, which had been replaced less than a year ago, was not to her liking. Again, had we known this was an issue during her three-day stay, we would have made every effort to relocate her to a room with a bed that met her expectations.

Finally, I seldom take issue with the comments that appear in these reviews as I feel it is each guest’s prerogative to share their impressions, good or bad, with the traveling public so they can make an informed lodging decision. I do, however, take exception to this guest calling in to question the veracity of our reviews. The reviews which appear under our TripAdvisor listing are the unedited, unscripted and unvarnished opinions of our past guests.

It really doesn't get any better than The Brewery Gulch Inn: everything is top drawer, from the accommodations to the food & wine to the impeccable service. Champagne awaits you as you enter your room and the spoiling just goes on and on! Guy, Steven, Chef Peg - the entire team makes you want to stay here forever. Ocean views abound, and you can take lots of great walks right out the door. The gourmet breakfasts are sensational: everything is made from scratch.

You simply won’t have a more pleasant experience: it’s the best food of any B&B I’ve yet experienced. And they serve four local wines each evening, including gems like Navarro’s dry muscat blanc and Phillips Hill pinot, along with locally brewed beers. A light supper is served each evening: enjoy it on the ocean view deck or in the dining room, or in your own room. Many local wines are available for purchase by the bottle, and there’s always a delicious dessert to cap everything off.

Room Tip: Ask for the Osprey Room - it's at the end of the hall, with windows on three sides that open to...

We are so glad we stayed at this Inn. The accomodations were excellent. The bed was very comfortable and we slept like we would if we were home. The Brewery Gulch Inn is picture perfect in every way. The decor is wonderful, the food was a gourmet treat. If you enjoy nature, and I assume you do if you are traveling the Pacific Coast, there were deer grazing in the back yard and Stellars Jays eating at the feeder. The value for the cost of the lodging was exceptional as well. It's the little things that count...wonderful amenities in the bathroom, dvd's available to borrow, a high powered viewer to enjoy the birds at the feeder up close, and a choice of four complimentary wines with dinner. Everyone who works at the Inn was extremely helpful and friendly and the owner was a wonderful host, full of helpful tips regarding the surrounding area. Thank you for a super experience! The only complaint we have is that the other Inns and Hotels that we stayed at as we traveled through California paled in comparison!

Room Tip: Our room, Smuggler's Cove had a nice view of the water.
