“We loved it”
Reviewed November 8, 2013

My wife and I stayed here for two nights in October and we loved it. Steven is a great guy and the breakfasts that he prepared were incredible. We also enjoyed relaxing in the living room area in the evenings with the wine and cheese that he offered. It was a great time to meet other guests and share recommendations. We stayed in the Windsor Room which was at the top of the steps and it was just beautiful, although I would have to say all of the rooms seemed to be. We peeked in on the two bottom floor rooms while the maids were cleaning them and they were equally beautiful. We certainly wouldn't have been upset with any of them. The hotel is conveniently located in Mendocino for easy walking. Unfortunately, it was foggy and cold while we were there but it was fun to walk along the coast and explore the funky town. Since we are East Coasters, this really reminded us of the quaint sea coast towns in Maine. The views along the coast line were incredible. We can also strongly recommend Wild Fish and Cafe Beaujolais for dinner as they were both wonderful. We loved The Blue Door Inn and Steven was the perfect host. If we ever get back to Mendocino, we will stay here!

Room Tip: The Windsor room was great although all of the rooms were beautiful. This room faces away from the c...

The Blue Door Inn is as impressive as it's website suggests. Recently refurbished in a contemporary style that tastefully compliments this historic Victorian building.
We were fortunate to stay two nights in the Buckingham which is their premier room. It was superb from the massive king-sized bed to the spacious en suite including jet tub and separate shower.
Unfortunately, Steven, the Innkeeper, was on his days off for most of our stay and his replacement was not nearly as able. He was helpful enough when asked for advice or assistance but otherwise seemed disinterested and bored.
Overall, we loved the Blue Door Inn but the welcome could have been warmer.

I spent more than I usually do for a B&B, but it was worth it. My wife raves about it, and says it was one of her favorite places to stay on the trip. The room was impeccably furnished with fireplace, high quality bed, 2 person shower, widescreen TV, etc.

The most amazing thing was the gourmet breakfast. I'm sorry I've forgotten his name, but the chef/inn manager who prepared the frittata breakfast did a spectacular job. The service here, however, is memorably outstanding.

As a side note....if you've seen any other of my reviews, you might think I always give everybody high marks. This can be explained by the fact that I do extensive research up front and try to weed out potentially bad or questionable places. As a result, I have at least an 80% likelihood that my choices for lodging and restaurants will be excellent. Once in a while, where choices are limited, you pay your money and take your chances, and maybe it won't be perfect. That's just part of the adventure and fun of travel. That is not the case in Mendocino, where the choices are myriad.

Room Tip: The Windsor Room is a winner.

We stayed for 3 nights in September - celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary in style. The inn is simply stunning, we stayed in the Buckingham mini suite which was light and airy, very large running across the whole of the front of the inn, exquisitely furnished with a sitting area and a gorgeous bathroom complete with jetted tub. Steve was the most gracious host, discretely there if you needed anything. The breakfasts were truly delicious and we looked forward each morning to enjoying this whilst chatting away about our plans for the day with other guests. We tried to ensure we were back in the afternoon to enjoy a glass of complementary wine whilst sitting peacefully on the decking in the garden whilst enjoying the serenity of the Inn and Mendocino. If only we could pick the Blue Door Inn up and bring it back to the UK - we could have stayed there for ever!

Room Tip: Check out the Buckingham - well worth the splurge - pure luxury.

Unlike many Victorian style B&Bs the Blue Door is both contemporary and comfortable. You can walk all over Mendocino from the inn. Even with that proximity to restaurants and shops, the inn itself is very quiet.

Steven could not have been a better host. And he cooks a delicious breakfast. We hope to return to The Blue Door Inn.

Room Tip: We were in one of the smaller rooms, The Sandringham. It was lovely. It's on the first floor...

Ok so we had to go up to Mendocino for the music festival - (who wouldn't want to see Jorma even if Jack was unable to make it). Where to stay, where to stay?? with so many bed and breakfast choices in Mendocino, we chose the Blue Door Inn based on Tripadvisor of course!). To say we were glad we did would be a large understatement. We got there prior to check-in (which is at 3) but this gave us a great chance to check out the town (about 1 block away) and the very nice grounds. It is also close to the bluffs to watch the sunset.

We returned and were welcomed in by Steven - I won't go too much into how kind he is - read all the reviews - suffice to say, he treated myself and my wife like long time friends. The building itself is a historical building (as many are in Mendocino) but feels so nice inside and they did a great job at decorating - not stuffy at all. We stayed in the Sandringham which I think is one of the smaller rooms but this was perfect for us - there were others upstairs as well. Gas fireplace for heat, windows w/o screens, comfy bed - oh yeah. From the 2 course breakfast in the morning to the wine (local of course) and snacks in the afternoon/early evening we loved it. We enjoyed talking with the other guests during these times as well - I guess all the good/kind people are going here. We talked travel and of course restaurants. Can't I rate this place higher than 5 stars?

I could go on and on about this place but you should make your memories instead. Steven & Victor - thank you. Needless to say, we will be back. ps, there is more to California wines than Napa... (and of course Jorma & Barry played their hearts out - nearly 3 hours)

Room Tip: If you want larger, go to the 2nd floor, first floor more intimate rooms

My wife and I need a few days of R and R after her recent work assignment in Angola. This was the perfect prescription. The coastal weather was warmer than usual and made for perfect walk etc. The inn is lovely in the best sense of the word. Central location, but in Mendocino, what isn't?!
Victor greeted us upon arrival and made us feel welcome and comfortable. He also prepared breakfast! Deft touch in the kitchen. First morning was was poached pear followed by eggs benedict.
We stayed in the Windsor room on the upper floor. Very well appointed. Given the warmth of the day the only thing we would have wanted for was a ceiling fan!
Highly recommend the property
