“Good choice in Mendocino”
Reviewed May 13, 2005

Great location! Park your car and walk everywhere. We were expecting more luxury than we got, but after we got acclimated to the rustic and relaxing ambiance of the inn and Mendocino, we really enjoyed our stay here. We stayed in room 19, which is probably the best room there. It is on the 2nd floor of an old barn and has a deck that overlooks the garden and the ocean. It has a separate sitting area and a huge fireplace which they clean out for you each day. The furniture is "country antique". There is almost no drawer or hanging space. They allow animals here and our room smelled like dogs until they sprayed to eliminate the odor. The staff was willing to help in any way possible.

My wife and I stayed one night here and overall the experience was nice. We recommend NOT staying in the main house, as the rooms are either very small and cramped, noisy, or both. We stayed in Room 1, which was right above the restaurant and bar and near the check-in desk. We could hear a lot of noise from the restaurant until about 10:30pm (i.e. you'll hear noise and be able to listen to conversations until the restaurant closes). In the morning, we heard noise from the staff working at the check-in desk and other guests which started at about 7:30am. Also, the DVD library and Wi-Fi access area is right outside of the room, so expect some noise from that.

We thought that charging $4 to rent a DVD from their library was a bit tacky. We pay enough for the rooms, let us borrow the DVDs for a night without charge. its not like it costs the hotel anything when we watch a movie.

The staff was very friendly and helpful and we appreciated the complimentary water, juices, and sodas. That was a nice touch. Of course, it did seem odd that they offer those things for free, but charge you to watch a DVD movie. The bathroom in Room 1 was really nice with a shower that had really good water pressure. The tub was great and big enough for two.

The restaurant was great. We had dinner here and the food was amazing. Our server was friendly and our water glasses were never more than half empty. Breakfast was also nice and we got to order from the restaurant menu.

If we went back to Mendocino, we'd probably try a different place to stay, given the price of the rooms here. If we did return to this hotel, we'd definitely stay in a room that is not in the main house.

We have just returned to our apartment in Virginia after 2 weeks travelling up the Pacific coast. MacCallum House was definitely a highlight of the trip! The food, lodging and service was the best we experienced. All of their employees that we encountered were wonderful and friendly. The breakfast was outstanding. We wished we would have had more time there. We recommend the in room hot stone massage and the Water Tower with the bathroom which has a suana, a huge tub and amazing ocean views. We'll be recommending the property to our friends and family and hope to visit again ourselves.

We stayed in the attic suite which was very nicely done and had a great view. The breakfast was as good as described. It is hard to make breakfast stand out, but the chef does so at this inn. One complait, the inn charges $1.00 per call for connecting to 800p numbers. This seems petty for a place that charges almost $300 per night. It is particular nuisance in Mendocino because there is not cell phone service.

We had a wonderful stay here. We were in the upper barn loft. Great fireplace, which we used everyday in June! They rebuild the kindling for you and you burn redwood. The restaurant is not to be missed, outstanding. We will be back!

Drinks and appetizers on the pleasant garden view porch, weather permitting, or in the gregarious bar are fine but dining in the historical fine room is not up to par.

The dining room is dark at night and much in need of a lighter and brighter decorating touch, the service could be better and the food was fair but not great. All and all for an expensive meal is was less than satisfying.

We went there for both drinks and appetizers which we enjoyed but on returning for their dinner service we found our server to be uninformed and basically inattentive making us and other wait while some diners came and left.

For a change of pace meal I ordered their acorn squash with other vegetables dinner entree (at a pricey $22). Iit was basically lacking in subtlety (it had a heavy handed sauce-maybe of a soy sauce base) and the other vegies which were said to accompany it were absent except for being mixed in a mashed garnish which was spread on the acorn rather than being a few singular taste bites on their own. My spouse's dish was better but not great. I mentioned my dissatisfaction and gave a few suggestions to the manager who listened but did not really engage except to say the cooks needed to work out things a little better there.

No wonder the Mendocino locals we spoke to said they go there for snacks and drinks but not dinner. The were exactly right.
