My boyfriend and I booked the MacCallum House six months ago through a Travelzoo deal. Of course now, I see the deal everywhere--$299 for two nights with free breakfast and a nightly $14 credit. This was my first trip to the Mendocino area.

The B&B was just as it is pictured. We booked our room months after we bought the deal and that is my only regret as we didn't get the room (#33) that we really wanted.

That said, the suite we had, the Morning Glory, was very lovely, spacious and comfortable. It was off campus (about 5 blocks up the street) and that was fine. We walked back and forth with no issues. Our building was next door to a cemetery, so if that stuff bothers you, you may want to ask for a different room. There is a complimentary small bottle of wine in the room as well as a Kruig coffee maker with a small selection of coffee and teas.

The bathroom was very large (wheelchair accessible) and had some really nice smelling lotion and shampoos. There is also a living space with a table and chairs, and a love seat across from a fireplace and large flatscreen TV.

We had a small balcony with a table and chairs and access to the garden.

The main building was very pretty and had well manicured gardens surrounding it including a grassy area with a croquet game set up.

We used our $14 daily credit to sit by the roaring fire in the bar, which was very charming. They have a specialty list of drinks (even one called Honey Boo Boo), but we chose to have champagne each night as we were celebrating my boyfriends birthday. There is a nice lounge area around the fire with an eclectic collection of old couches and furniture.

Our first night we had dinner a few miles south of town at Wild Fish. I highly recommend a visit to this new and delicious restaurant. I would have gone there again our second night, but we were late getting to dinner after enjoying the sunset and dinner time seems to end at 8:30 in this town. We ate the the MacCallum House restaurant the second night. They were very kind to allow us to dine there with only 30 minutes of time left. We got there at 8. My dinner was excellent; petrale sole, yam gnocchi, and spaghetti squash with kale.

The complimentary breakfast was also very good. I had the red plate special both mornings, 2 eggs, bacon, potatoes, fruit and toast. They make a homemade pear jam that was eaten with a spoon it was so tasty! My BF had the banana pancakes both days with pecan butter and maple syrup with a full sliced banana on top. If you really want to indulge, you have an option to get their homemade vanilla ice cream on top.

We would stay here again if ever visiting the Mendocino coast. It was beautiful, extremely relaxing and very romantic.

Room Tip: If you book one of these deals, don't hesitate to pick your room straight away!!

My friends and I stayed at the MacCallum House vacation rental property called Ocean Song, which is located 150 yards down the street from the main house. It was amazing. It had 2 bedrooms with 2 queen size beds and their own bathrooms and TV's, as well as 2 sleeper sofas, a huge kitchen and living room, a hot tub in the back yard and a beautiful deck in front that faces the ocean. Coming from the city, the place felt like a huge mansion. It was very comfortable and fun to hang out and relax in, especially one night when it was cold and rainy. We had a wonderful dinner, drinks, and breakfast at the main house. All the food was excellent. The general manager, Herman, is great. He was extremely attentive, friendly, and down-to-earth - very professional. We all felt really comfortable and had a blast. It was hard to leave on Sunday morning! I highly recommend the MacCallum House Inn!

Have stayed here a couple of times now. The first time was at the suggestion of a friend and they are pet friendly. We stayed upstairs in the barn which has an incredible deck for morning coffee and views of the ocean. The room was huge and had a great view also.
The restaurant is very good, but not great. It has a sunny breakfast room that warms you up on a chilly Mendocino morning. What is terrific however, is their great list of cocktails and great wines, and a lot of locals go there...so it is fun at night if you are interested in hanging with locals before dinner. Locals of all types and ages.
It is one block from the main part of town, so everything is available by foot.
It is now a twice a year visit for me...really love it there!
Don't miss a bloody mary at Dick's bar downtown. Just a dive bar, but the best bloody mary's ever.

Room Tip: The Upper Barn Suite is amazing! They also have a room downstairs in the barn that looks like it ha...

We enjoy visiting Mendocino on a fairly regular basis as it's just a few hours drive from the S.F. Bay area where we live. We were excited to give the MacCullum house a try as we'd eaten breakfast at their restaurant a few times and it was always quite tasty and a lovely setting. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the lodging.

We booked the "new" Upper Barn Suite which goes for $399.00 and was described as "...luxurious experience not to be missed. One of the largest and grandest rooms on the property..." on their brochure. Unfortunately this was not the case at all.

The room is quite dated with obvious deferred maintenance issues - not at all what anyone would describe as "luxury" quality. The cheap toilet seat had worn through spots in four places - not little spots, about 6 cm by 1-2 cm spots, which means it's been on there quite awhile. That's less than $15 to replace; water damage down the walls from the windows, especially the West facing high window, which had about 8 inches wide by 3 feet down water stains on the wall. Several areas of mold, mildew, and peeling paint in the bathroom/shower, and the grout between the tiles was pretty gross looking. a loose bathroom handle, Stains on the smoke smelling curtains, and so on....). This is not what anyone I know would expect in a 'luxury' quality room and especially as these are such easy things to repair.

In addition, the room had a smoky smell that I initially couldn't define and thought that perhaps it was due to the previous guest having recently burned a fire in the fireplace. We decided to overlook the unfortunate maintenance issues and just enjoy our stay. However, the next morning was chilly and I decided to start a fire in the fireplace. Unfortunately smoke began billowing into the room rather than up the chimney - the flu was in the open position (I've used many fireplaces - it's not as though I don't know how to open a flu) yet the smoke was absolutely pouring into the room. We can only surmise that, like the rest of the poor repair, the chimney likely had never been cleaned & was somehow blocked or clogged or something.

We immediately called and asked for the manager (the "front desk" girl blatantly stated that she was the manager) and were told that we needed to open the flu (well, duh!) and she'd call for a maintenance man to "help you figure out how to use the fireplace". Meanwhile we're opening the front door and the windows and smoke is billowing out everywhere. We began pulling all our clothes and belongings out to prevent smoke smells clinging to them/ruining them.

20 minutes has now passed and we've now called "the manager" girl at least 4 times requesting help. She stated "We have properties all over town - he'll get there when he can" and seemed to not be overly concerned about the smoke billowing out of the room. Seriously?!? In hind-sight I should have just called the fire department - perhaps that would have focused the attention of the supposed "manager". It was 30 minutes before a maintenance man showed up for this problem! Meanwhile all the restaurant guests sitting on the patio we're having quite a show watching the smoke billowing out and us trying to pull out our belongings...

Interestingly, my husband was approached by a guest who stated they'd stayed in that room the past summer and had the same thing happen (we were there late fall 2012), then another guest having breakfast on the porch (a local) overheard this conversation and added that he'd seen it happen at least twice when he's been around!

The "manager" offered no apologies, no means to rectify the situation - expecting we'd still stay in the room (can you believe it?), then offering us a very basic, non-premium room no where near the village center area (which is where most people want to stay so you can walk to everything) that was close to highway 1. We ended up just leaving to find a new place to stay, deciding that my husband would contact them to work out the financials once a new room was secured.

While not our usual style, the Mendocino hotel was amazingly accommodating, helping us get into a room that same morning (this all happened around 8 in the morning and we were in one of their rooms by 10). The quality of service at the Mendo hotel was far superior to the very poorly managed MacCullum house. It is so unfortunate, as the MacCullum has such potential to be a great destination Inn if it was better maintained and better managed. The girl who claimed to be the manager obviously has no education, training or background in management or customer service. Rather, she seemed more of a front desk clerk with the undeserved title of manager.

We've since spoken to other Marin and Sonoma county locals who've had really poor experiences at the MacCullum. (The rumor is that the owner is not willing to put in the necessary money for adequate maintenance or qualified/trained staff. Rather, they run it bare bones, doing only the bare minimum in order to maximize profit, and also that the General Manager, some fellow who seems to not be available to guests, is quite unpleasant to deal with if you're able to reach him about problems.). I wish we'd have known this ahead of time, as we'd have never booked with an inn with a reputation of such poor customer service & management.

We tend to stay at luxury type inns and resorts, however, we don't have hard-core, particular expectations like many luxury travelers. Typically we will overlook some issues here and there as it's almost impossible to find (or expect) perfection in any lodging. However, the way this issue was handled was absolutely appalling. The "manager" had our smoke filled room turned around and booked the next day - no chimney cleaning, no cleaning of drapes, nothing to mediate the smoke (likely this was the smoky smell I also noticed when first entering). What a risk and nightmare that room would be for anyone suffering respiratory disease or sensitivities!

Room Tip: Try to see a room before you book - the maintenance is poor and many are not in the condition portra...

We have stayed @ maccullum house twice now. Each time we have had a wonderful experience.
The rooms and grounds are beautiful, clean and well maintained. The staff is very helpful and courtious. Best of all it is in the amazing town of Mendocino.
On our last visit we stayed in the Napoean sweet. The Napolean sweet has Mendocinos best views.

Room # 33, in the Suites, is a beautiful room, with all the amenities -- private hot tub, jacuzzi, and sauna. The fireplace made everything so cozy, and the walk down the hill each morning to breakfast was breathtaking. Forget your cares, and let this beautiful Inn take care of you -- the bar in the main house is intimate -- desserts are great and the breakfast menu has something for everyone. The benedict breakfast was our favorite. We enjoyed the proximity of the local cemetery for our Halloween get-away -- great!

Room Tip: This room is ground level, there is a private hot tub which is nicely secluded, and you can enter an...

I make a trip to Mendocino once a year usually between August and November. I always stay at the MacCullum house in room #19. This is the upper suite in the Barn. The room is spacious, has a sauna and jacuzzi tub and a view of the ocean. There is also a large deck that is wonderful to read on or have an afternoon snack. There is a lovely breakfast that is included and if the weather is nice, you can eat on the wrap-around porch. The gardens are gorgeous, the feel of the place is relaxed and homey. Make sure to eat at least one night in the dining room and try the tasting menu. The food is fantastic, if you are lucky to get Russell as your waiter, he knows stories about the house when the family lived there. The bar is a MUST. Tony used to be the bartender and the brilliance behind the creative cocktails. Everyone is very friendly and accomodating. Most of the time, there is live music in the bar area. Everything about this place is fantastic and cured whatever ails you.

Room Tip: You must choose #19. It is the best room at the Inn. The room below (#17) is almost the same but has...
