“Historic Hotel”
Reviewed January 22, 2013

Spent the night at this historic hotel, had a great dinner in the dining room and enjoyed the ocean view from the upper balcony. The room was a little noisy while the dining room was open as it was above the kitchen. Once the dining room closed it was quiet and by propping the door open we could hear the surf. The staircase was stunning. Just a beautiful, historic location and a real relaxing evening.

Room Tip: Rooms above the kitchen are noisy.

We visit the Mendocino Coast fairly regularly and have often popped into the Mendocino Hotel for some great clam chowder and coastal views while warming up. This time we did a quick mid-week trip to the coast during the holidays and thought we'd stay at the property. The staff and service were great. The lobby is a very charming Victorian sitting room with a fireplace and windows looking out onto the Pacific Ocean; a great place to play cards or sip an Irish coffee. We stayed in a garden suite room with a fireplace. The rooms were nice, more than adequate but a little worn and dated. Dinner in their Victorian dining room was also great. If you're looking for charm, good food, proximity to Mendocino shops and the headlands, this is the place to stay.

Room Tip: Be aware that part of the property is European style, meaning not all rooms have private bath.

I dropped by the hotel to have dinner at the lobby lounge based on a recommendation from my inn keeper. I was not disappointed! When I first arrived at 8pm, I was surprised at how full the lounge was. My waitress, Amanda, immediately came to greet me and was warm and welcoming and provided great service, which was surprising with how busy the lounge was.

I had the house made meatloaf and mash potato which came with carrots and broccoli. For dessert I had the chocolate torte with vanilla ice cream - both I would definitely come back for.

Room Tip: Didn't stay at the Inn, but would recommend the lobby lounge for dinner or drinks.

Grumpy reception. Musty, old smelling room, lumpy & sagging bed, tiny TV, lights not working. What about $300 per night doesn't add up? We didn't stay. They didn't seem surprised or concerned. But, their marketing materials certainly touted their Trip Advisor rating. We're experienced world travelers and this is our first negative review. Curious about their rating. This wasn't just a bad day.

I have always loved this property. Or, should I say "properties" because the rooms are in many various buildings close together in the downtown area. I'm glad it still exists with all the charm, however I do wish they'd give it a facelift. If it weren't for the amazing front desk service we received, this review would have been 3 stars. The rooms are tired, the wallpaper peeling, the baths awkward, the stairs creaky, the rooms cold..... but it is like staying at grandmas - you still love it with all the faults. The good parts are the water pressure and hot water as well as the clean and comfortable sheets. and, even though the room felt worn, it didn't feel dirty. Our bed was pretty comfortable too, although I have a feeling this is not standardized in the buildings.

Overall for the price, it is a good pick for the area. And walking distance to everything in town!

Room Tip: They have many different rooms with different options like fire places, second or first floor, baths...

Wife and I visited in November using a Travelzoo voucher. I'm always prepared to be treated like a 2nd class citizen when I present a voucher, but at this hotel they treated us very well! Since it was a slow weeknight, they put is in a great garden view room with a separate balcony and fireplace, it was a great room for just my wife and I. The room came with a couple of Presto logs to burn and the bed was a big four poster that was waist high. Great shower pressure, nice bathroom, large closet and king bed with reading lamps over each side of the bed. All we need. We ate at the restaurant both nights, happy with the offerings.

Be warned though, there ain't much in Mendocino. Perfect if what you're looking for ain't much.

I stayed here quite by accident due to bad, bad weather making driving home from a day of business in Fort Bragg impossible. From my first call asking for directions and inquiring if they had room for a shivering, water-drenched traveler, Dena was warm, kind, funny, accommodating and just as delightful as you could imagine. My room was beautifully put together with rich fabrics, beautiful antiues, a nice assortment of toiletries and (I know, random, but still FUN) the toilet flusher was a pull up knob on the top of the tank. I will be making a trip back for pleasure very soon! Thank you Dena and Mendocino Hotel!
