“Wonderful Walking Tour of Mendocino--Fascinating!!!”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

My husband and I were in Mendocino for 2 nights between Christmas and New Year's and they offer a walking tour everyday at 11:00 for 1 hour and 45 minutes. It costs $10.00 per person and is worth every penny! You will learn so much about the history of Mendocino including how it was built and the prominent characters who established the town. Jeff was our tour guide and he told us many, many stories of the people there, a lot of which he has discovered through reading letters and historical documents from the early days. We got to go inside the Presbyterian church and he showed us the bell ringing rope which a knot maker made. In knots and colors it tells the entire history of the times starting with when the church was built in the late 1800's. Amazing and unique!
After the tour we went into the museum upstairs to see the bedrooms set up to show the Victorian era. We saw the downstairs when we first arrived. Very interesting place and history! You will not be disappointed if you do the tour, and it will help you understand more about this little town and the surrounding area.

“Walking tour was outstanding”
Reviewed December 21, 2013

After reading about the walking tour here on Tripadvisor, I made a special effort to make it. Being during the winter, it was only offered Saturday and Sunday.

Jeff was our docent, and he made the tour fascinating. He filled us in on the long history of Mendocino and was able to answer our many questions. It adds so much to the history to be able to see the very places where so many things happened. We;; worth the $10.

We did not have time to tour the small museum, but it looked like a worthwhile plae to spend a little time for the mere $2 donation that they requested.

“Interesting history”
Reviewed October 3, 2013

The docent here was very knowledgeable about the history of Mendocino and kept us entertained with one story after another about the ups and downs of this quaint village and the people who had lived here. The only down side is the limited hours of operation,.

“California history not in textbooks”
Reviewed August 29, 2013

We took a two hour walking tour of Mendocino, offered by the Kelley House Museum on weekends at 11:00. Our guide was a local, dressed in period costume, who took on the persona of a real 19th century Mendocino citizen. Days of Our Lives has nothing on the families, business shenanigans, taverns, and local ladies of Mendocino. It was a hoot and very educational, a behind the scenes view of this very scenic tourist spot.

Well worth the $10 donation price for the two hours.
