“A gorgeus setting in a spacious inn, but I had the bad experience of a moldy gross shower and dust in the room.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2011

Upon arriving at the Agate Cove Inn, the surroundings a truly impressive. We see the coast of Northern California and the gardens of the Inn which are magnificent. Our room had a picture window that looked out to the ocean, beyond the gardens. It was large but had a layer of dust on the furniture and the dust covers around the bed, clearly needed washing.
The worst part was the shower which was large but full of mold. This truly distressed me and we should have asked to change rooms but just did not want to be bothered. Very highly priced inn and not such great cleaniliness.

From the room we had (Garnet), to the setting on the cliff above Agate Cove, to the delicious breakfasts, the beautiful gardens and the gracious hospitality the hosts offered at every turn we hated to leave, i mean really hated to leave. It is one of the most peaceful places I have ever stayed.

Usually on vacation we plan alot into our days to "see everything" and that was our intent to see the Mendocino coastal region. We had a hard time tearing ourselves away from our private front porch overlooking a garden and fountain. Did not miss the internet, our cell phones rarely worked and we never watched tv or read a paper. Each morning was spent sipping coffee in the mini-park across the road listening to the waves crash on the rocks below.

The inn is located about a mile north of the Village, but right next to the road that leads to the headlands area, not especially close, but all are walkable. It is situated near Hwy 1 and you can hear some traffic, but to be honest after the first day i did not even notice it. Totally quiet at night.

Beds are amazing, linens are top quality. Plenty of room in our cottage, had a refrigerator and microwave. Always had coffee and hot water in the guest area of the kitchen, as well as some of Laraine's fresh scones if you were lucky. Breakfasts were delicious - first morning included a spiced poached pear and ginger pancakes with a citrus cream and fresh fruit topping....certainly did not need any syrup, everything was fresh and well prepared, beautifully served. Endless pourings of juice and coffee while we sat and enjoyed the ocean view...no hurry or pressure to finish.

Roger and Laraine truly communicate a unique sense of gracious hospitality to their guests and have built a very special oasis for all who visit there. We want to return as soon as we can and see some of the places we missed on this trip!

The Agate Cove Inn is exactly as it advertises to be; the website shows the farmhouse and the cottages beautifully, and when we got there, everything was as we expected. It's a gem--quiet, beautiful gardens, beautifully decorated room with all sorts of nice little touches (i.e. fresh flowers from the garden; complementary sherry; an honor bar with snacks/drinks fairly priced; 24 hour guest services room with coffee/tea, videos, books). The bathroom was huge--the soaking tub and bath goodies alone made me love the place :) The innkeepers are very hospitable but respect your privacy--and the breakfasts every morning are gourmet. Beautiful place.

This was one of the least enjoyable stays in a long time. The Inn is located right next to busy HW 1, so the cottages are not very quiet. The bedsheets are thin and worn and the rooms smelled very strongly. The plumbing, bath/shower and the general appearance of the rooms/cottages is that of a low-priced motel and not at all what one would expect for ~ $200 a night. On the positive side, the owners are very friendly and helpful.

Ouch, that was a terrible review! I certainly would not want to stay at such an inn.
We have been remodeling each cottage and bathroom since purchasing the inn in 2005. With the competed work done, we have now had a virtual tour filmed of each room. This will be posted on our website in August 2011 so visitors to our website will be able to see a 360 degree sweep of each room.
We are pleased to have been written up in many travel publications. A most recent article included us as" one of the 15 most affordable seaside inns". We continue to strive to offer our guests a beautiful experience in this slice of paradise with no price increase since 2005.
We are sorry you did not have the same glorious experience that our other guests report.
Agate Cove Inn is not for everyone.

My wife and I stayed at the Agate Cove Inn in July 2011 for 3 nites. I would highly recommend the Inn. Beautiful view, delicious breakfasts, and we took our dog. The owners are very nice and helpful and have a wonderful breakfast menu. Each day is a different dish, but all were excellent. They allowed us to take our dog which was great. The view of the ocean from the lawn and dining roomis breathtaking. We walked into town on the bluff road each day which was wonderful. We plan on going back next summer.

Superb views of the endless crashing surf from the breakfast room and grounds. Probably the best-sited B&B in Mendocino. Our room, Sunstone, was one of the few with sea views; the lack of daytime indoor communal space and the cold sea breeze would make enjoying the views difficult for those in many other rooms.
We felt the prices were quite high for what we had.

Thank you for such a lovely review. We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay in the Sunstone room. The Sunstone room is the closest to the ocean of all of our rooms. We have 10 rooms, 9 have ocean views. We agree, that we have one of the best locations on the Mendocino Coast for ocean views and that was the main reason for purchasing this inn. Our main house is open from 8:30 a.m. until 7 or 8:00 P.M. for our guests to use. Stunning views are seen from the main house breakfast room and from the public gardens and deck. Our location just 1/3 of a mile outside of the Village of Mendocino only adds to the serene location that we are blessed to have.
Thank you for your kind words and for contributing to Trip Advisor so others can benefit from your experience.

During a recent driving trip through Nothern California my wife and I had the pleasure of staying the night in the Amber Cottage at Agate Cove Inn. Words can't do justice to how nice and relaxing it was. The decorating used in the cottage is unique, the gardens surrounding the property were wonderful and full of hummingbirds. The view is spectacular and breakfast the following morning was wonderful.
