“A magical place to visit over and over again”
Reviewed June 7, 2011

My husband and I just returned from three lovely days at La Petite Maison in Mendocino. This is a very beautiful cottage set in the woods not more than 10 minutes from Mendocino. The house is surrounded by beautiful gardens all tended by the owner Mary, who is a magician in the garden, among other things. The cottage was filled with beautiful objects, all of which gave us a feeling of serenity. The bed was extremely comfortable and the kitchen fully stocked with everything you would need for cooking a meal. Of course, there are wonderful restaurants in Mendocino just minutes away. Mary is a delightful host - the kind of person you would want for a friend, and she and Peter have furnished the cabin with special care - you can tell how much they love the place. We will be thrilled to come back.

We stayed 10Sep to 12Sep 2010, and truly enjoyed the cottage and its peaceful garden surroundings. It is worth mentioning that the entire 2-story cottage shown in the pic is at one's disposal. The Zamas' are kind and gentle proprietors who are devoted to ensuring the highest quality stay of their guests, but also know to give their guests privacy.
The cottage has everything you could want to ensure a luxurious stay; cable TV, lots of towels, soaps, shampoo, well appointed kitchen. They were kind enough to stock the fridge with a bottle of chardonnay for our stay. The cozy dining table had on it fresh-cut flowers set in a small vase along with a fresh fruit tray. The garden surrounding features a little fishpond, and several lounge chairs....you get the idea. I don't want to give everything away...discovering the unexpected charms of a place is part of the fun. Suffice it to say that you would have to try pretty hard to not be satisfied with such a charming cottage and its charming proprietors. Finally, the location is pretty hard to beat in terms of convenience for further coastal and/or forest explorations. This review is also cross-posted at VRBO. Upon our departure back to Oakland, Peter Zama recommended GoldenEye Winery for a tasting and snack. We ended up on Goldeneye's back deck, and it was phenomenal! Imagine sitting under an umbrella sipping 8 different local wines while snacking on some local nuts, dried cherries and cheese, directly looking over sunny lush acreage of Sonoma valley Pinot vines, heavy with fruit. What more can you ask for? Nothing! Thank you Peter and Mary! We look forward to our next stay at La Petit Maison.

My husband and I stayed a La Petite Maison this past weekend and I cannot say enough about how wonderful our visit was. We only had a weekend at this lovely cottage, but if we could have stayed a month, we would have. We've not had that relaxing of a weekend in such a long time. The location of La Petite is wonderful - so very quiet! I cannot remember the last time that I did not hear car noise. You're only five minutes from the village of Mendocino so it's not like you have to go far for such a beautiful and quiet setting.

And enough cannot be said about Peter and Mary, they are lovely people who only made or visit that much more amazing. We cannot wait to go back!

We would highly recommend staying here. Mary, the owner, is so delightful and thoughtful. We loved how stocked the cottage was and enjoyed cooking and eating our meals at the little table that was so thoughtfully set with flowers. A card and bottle of wine greeted us, which was so thoughtful. It really is a private retreat, Peter and Mary are available if you have questions, but otherwise you really are to yourselves. We enjoyed making fires every night and cozying up to read and sip wine. It's close enough to the village (less than 10 minutes), but far enough away from everyone else. We loved the flowers, plants and forest surroundings. We really wanted to get away, rest and relax and La Petite Maison allowed us to do just that!! We can't wait to go back here someday and will always cherish our lovely time at the cottage. Thanks Mary for making our time here so special!!! Stay here, it's wonderful!!

We booked at La Petite Maison for three nights thinking we would move on further north but had such a relaxing and wonderful time that we stayed an extra four! The house is in an idylic setting tucked into the redwood forest but not too far from Mendocino town. At breakfast we ate on the terrace and had two deer come up to inspect my cooking! The bed swallowed us up and we slept like kings and queens. The kitchen is very well stocked and there were loads of little "extras" and things in the bathroom. The house is beautifully furnished but now my wife wants me to redo our bedroom!
The owners couldn't do enough for us but were never encroaching - we really felt like we were in the middle of the forest. We found the place on Tripadvisor having looked at other places along the coast and are so glad we chose La Peitie Maison.

This was my 2nd stay at La Petite Maison, I could not wait to get back to the beauty and solitude. Peter and Mary are the perfect hosts, they are so kind and they see to it that their guests are well pampered. They have a personal touch that makes one feel so welcome, whether it's the coffee beans for that perfect cup in the morning or the cozy plush robe to snuggle in. Their property is lovely, a garden oasis in the redwoods. I love waking up to the birds singing and seeing the treetops through the skylights over the bed. The location is wonderful, just a few minutes from town and the sea, but a world away from any hustle and bustle. A true hideaway cottage, I am already looking forward to my next visit!

La Petite Maison is not a place. It's an experience. Mary and Peter are two of the warmest, most charming people I have ever met and they made our brief weekend stay at La Petite Maison the most magical experience ever. Every detail of the weekend, from the welcoming bottle of wine and the cards to the robes and fragrant gardens, made me confident that I will definitely return. The gorgeous cottage truly offers everything. If you are looking for peace, tranquility, privacy, rejuvenation, gardens, redwoods, and star-gazing, then you need not look any further than La Petite Maison!!!!
