We recently spent our vacation in Elk, California, and signed up for one of the beach horse rides offered by Ross Ranch. When we arrived, we discovered that we were part of a much larger group of customers, not the "private" ride that the ranch advertised. The woman conducting the ride, presumedly one of the owners, did not offer "instruction" in how to handle the horses but instead scolded her riders, when, for example, one woman's horse seemd a little fidgety, a European traveler did not immediately understand one of her instructions, when a child rider did not kick her horse hard enough to get it moving right away, and when another of her customers accidentally dropped their helmet. She was a nightmare. We rode down the beach in a regimented line unable to even talk to one another, while our tour "leader" spoke on her cell phone for much of the trip. Later on, when one among our group started to experience severe leg pain and asked if she could get down and walk her horse or find some other relief, the woman said absolutely not and forced her to finish the ride. I have never written a review before, but our experience was so awful that I thought I must warn others. I hope that Ross Ranch does not treat their animals with the same disregard as they do humans.
