“Top for Redwood Hike”
Reviewed July 26, 2010

We were referred here by a ranger at Van Damme when they told us the fern canyon trail there was closed. The easy hike to the modest waterfall in Russian Gulch was wonderful Starts with about a mile of mostly paved track that is also open to bicycles. Then you can take the long trail (2+ miles up a side stream and over a hill, highly recommended) or continue up the main creekbed 3/4 mile to the falls. Hillside covered with ferns, serene surroundings, generally easy walking, impressive redwoods (albeit second growth) and it is the perfect recipe for a couple hour stroll. We ran into a couple who live in nearby Ft. Bragg and they said this was their favorite hiking area (they came in by a longer trail route).

“Enjoyed the ocean views along the coast side of the park”
Reviewed May 28, 2009

We hiked the peninsula at the park and went to "devil's punchbowl".

The sinkhole was an interesting site, but we enjoyed the various places along the ocean cliffs where water would flow in and then blow back out with a loud sound and a mist.

The rocky landscape along this trail and being able to look across at the Mendocino Headlands made for a relaxing and enjoyable hike

“Every bit as nice as Muir Woods and other parks, without the crowds”
Reviewed June 1, 2008

We hiked maybe about 10 miles in this park. We saw the waterfall, kept going. From redwoods to 1,000,000s of plants, and zero bugs, we loved this park. The trails were well=kept and rarely did we see other people. We absolutely loved this park. The waterfall was a nice thing to see, but not solely worth walking the park. We loved the park for other reasons, including the trees, the trails, and the cool weather. A lot of fun. A must-do in Mendocino.

“Pleasant, quiet stay.”
Reviewed May 13, 2008

I have stayed many times at other campgrounds in the area, but May 2008 was my first stay at Russian Gulch. It was less crowded than MacKerricher and Van Damme state parks, but also offered significantly less beach access.

The sites are exclusively in the gulch, unlike Van Damme, which offers higher spots, but the sites are lush, beautiful and private. The bathrooms are spaced further than in the other campgrounds, but they were clean and the showers provided terrific hot water pressure.

The Fern Canyon trail, similar to Van Damme's trail of the same name, offered a more spectacular finish, with a beautiful waterfall. But the beach is tiny, rocky, and of interest mostly to abalone divers. Other attractions are accessible by vehicle, but little else is of interest on foot.

Overall, this is a great campground for peace and quiet and a beautiful setting, but with less activities adjacent than its nearby northern and southern cousins.
