“Very Nice!”
Reviewed July 6, 2010

Stayed just one night, but would have stayed a week! Brand new hotel with very friendly staff. Bed was super comfortable! Indoor pool was great for the teenagers. Complementary breakfast in the morning was plentiful and the staff was so accommodating. Absolutely would stay here again!

My son and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express for three nights while attending spring preview days at Humboldt State University. None of the recent reviews mention how the hotel works around the flight schedules of the small regional airport located nearby. The flights from LAX are at incredibly awful times (arrival after 11 PM and departure at 6 AM!) and the hotel has shuttle and breakfast accommodations timed accordingly. You can save a day of rental car charges by using their shuttle system. You can either rent your car the morning after your flight or return it in the evening before you take off at 6 AM. (Note: only Hertz is open for the 11 PM flight). If the late flight were to be delayed and you could not rent a car, then you would have a very difficult time reaching another hotel. We felt that the staff were very friendly and I always enjoy the big bathroom counters in most HIE hotels. I actually consider it an advantage to be staying out of Eureka/Arcata in a more isolated area. The natural beauty of this coastal region will take your breath away, but Eureka is not pleasant and Arcata is full of homeless people. We enjoyed our stay at the Holiday Inn Express and would definitely recommend it to others (expecially if you are using the airport).........

This hotel in McKinleyville is perfect for a stopover or as a base in your redwood vacation. The location is perfect because it's quiet and scenic. While you can see the hotel from the 101 highway, there is nothing around the hotel to make noise; it was super quiet. We could see the Pacific Ocean from our room. that's something you'd have to pay for at a resort hotel. The rooms were ordinary but well maintained and updated. This hotel is 10 years old but you'd think it was new. The complimentary breakfast was typical but satisfying enough to get you to lunch. Did I say it has a great location? We took a stroll after breakfast and found an amazingly beautiful trail to Clam Beach. Ask the front desk how to get to the Hammond Trail. It was beautiful and lush with wildflowers and ferns. We saw a harem of sea lions on the beach upon our arrival. Try to get a room with a balcony facing the ocean. It's $10.00 more but you won't be disappointed.

My seventy-six year old mother and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in McKinleyville, California for the night of Thursday, August 6th, 2009. When making our reservations online as a Priority Club member, we requested a room on the top floor, away from any noise, and that is what we were given.

The large non-smoking room included two queen-sized beds, each with four pillows on them, a clock radio, two regular chairs with a table, a large television and remote with a poor selection of channels, a coffeemaker, a mini-fridge, a microwave, and an iron/ironing board. The room also had a nice bamboo plant and a small bench.

The large bathroom included four sets of towels, a hairdryer, bottles of conditioner and mouthwash (but no shampoo), as well as two bars of soap, a shower cap and a mending (sewing) kit. There was a handle to get into the shower, but there was no handle to hold on to once you got in, which my mother did not like.

The hotel is located just off of Highway 101 near the local airport and has an indoor swimming pool, hot tub, and a business and fitness center. It really isn't close to any restaurants or shopping, so a short drive into town is a necessity.

After taxes, the American Automobile Association rate for Room 234 came to $152.89 U.S. Funds, which was the most expensive on our trip down the Pacific Coast. Overall, we were very comfortable in the room as it was very clean and would stay there again, but I would do a bit more research to see if I could find another similar hotel for a better price.

Stayed here for one night while driving down the Oregon and Northern California coast. I had read reviews of hotels in Eureka reporting that their cars had been broken into. Now that I've driven through that town I can see why - the whole town appeared run down and economically depressed. This hotel, however, sits nearly alone next to a small airport in a more affluent suburb of Eureka. It was perfect for my purposes. There was absolutely no noise from the road or airport, and it seemed very safe. The only downside is that apart from the airport there is nothing immediately adjacent. However, several restaurants, stores, etc. are 5 minutes away by car in McKinleyville. As far as the hotel itself goes, it was perfectly average for this brand. The room was clean and typically appointed, the service was fine, the breakfast was the standard HIE fare, and I didn't use the pool.

The sheets were dirty, the jacuzzi had a ring of dirt in it. The housekeeping doesn't seem to know how to clean. The front desk management doesn't seem to care about a problem once reported. The GM is never around to talk to we looked for the gm 3 times while there and no one was around. I will not ever stay in this nasty hotel again.
