“Perfect Shasta Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

I received this review from one of my clients who recently stayed at the McCloud Mercantile Hotel 02OCT2012 and was completely blown away by the customer sevice, warmth and appreciation given by Kevin and Darlene. I knew when I spoke w/him on the phone that it woud be an awesome experience and he proved me right!

If you are heading up near Shasta, stay in the McCloud Mercantile Hotel. You will be graciously welcomed by Darlene and Kevin who manage the hotel, store and do all sorts of things. They are extremely helpful and very accessible and care about your well-being.

We stayed for 3 nights in the 1940's room which is spacious and comfortable. Very clean. Includes a large whirlpool tub. Bathroom is spacious and the fluffy towels just right. Beds are perfect. After an active day and bath or shower, you will sink into sweet comfort. Breakfast is included. Try the breakfast burrito at the Morning Star Cafe just behind the store.

I very much hope to return. I feel like I brought back some of the good feelings from our stay at the McCloud Mercantile Hotel.

You will love the infinite forests in the area. Hiking trails are a short drive from the Mercantile. Drive to the falls and hike around. Also, you will want to walk through the town of McCloud full of history. Read about the history in the McCloud binder found in the sitting room near the small kitchenette, common area. Kevin and Darlene are happy to make suggestions for your outings.

Room Tip: 1940's room which is spacious and comfortable. Very clean. Includes a large whirlpool tub. Bathr...

We were with a large group of friends staying in varying rooms and B&B's in McCloud. My husband and I were upgraded, I think because of a reservation problem that had to do with another client. We had been booked in the pet room and didn't have a pet, hence, they switched us...is what I believe happened and our upgrade was the kind of room where you wanted to stay at least TWO nights, but we only had the luxury of staying one. The owners were extremely accommodating. Price of room included a $20.00 credit to a couple of cafes in the same building. Our breakfast was delicious. There is "nothing" to do in McCloud which makes it a great getaway from everyday life. The small selection of shops are good. The local restaurant, The Lodge, excelled at accommodating our large group on short notice. We have no negatives about our stay at the McCloud Mercantile Hotel.

Room Tip: This very old historic hotel has been remodeled and does have an elevator! There are no coffeepots...

We like to stay in small town America on our regular trips from the UK and this has to now be one of our favorite towns. Everyone is really friendly and wanting to know why two Brits were there! The Mercantile was really comfy and the staff friendly. A great place that we want to come back to.

We stayed three nights at the Merc; the shower was a little quirky until you figured it out, and as early risers we could have wished the cafe opened before 8 AM, but other than minor details like that it was close to perfect. The owners and staff were very helpful. McCloud is the kind of place where drivers wave at you, and it's a great central location to explore north-central CA from; we drove to the falls of the McCloud River one day, around the east side of the mountain another, and to the old stagecoach route past Callahan and Ft. Jones on the third.

Room Tip: The Charles Miller room has a wide view of Mt. Shasta, even from bed. Highly recommended

We stayed here for two nights to get away from the city, the hotel is in a really small town but this was a big positive. There is an old firetruck, railway carriages etc beside the hotel and some gift shops in the town and a cafe with good food downstairs. The hotel is really well decorated, modern with a view to the past. We stayed in the Friday George room and we were very happy overall. I would however avoid this particular room because there is an extractor fan right outside the window which is fairly noisy when the cafe downstairs is open and was disappointing as we wanted to get away from construction noise from our neighbors for a couple of days. This room does have a view of Mount Shasta.

My daughter had her wedding reception here. The owners, Darlene & Kevin, were so helpful and went beyond the call of duty. All of our guest kept saying this is the most wonderful place to have a wedding reception AND the greatest place to stay. We had a stress free reception at a beautiful venue.

We booked 2 nights to stay at the Hot & Tot room. It is one of their cheapest rooms and yet, it's one of the best we've stayed in so far. It's large, beautifully decorated with a personal touch without being kitsch as it happens way too often to my taste in B&Bs and spotless. The only thing is that the bed made a noise each time we turned around. Nevertheless, the hotel is still a favorite. The building is splendid inside and out and is located in a very cute town.

We had a $20 coupon to use at the cafe downstairs. Since we only took a huge omelet for the both of us with a bowl of fruits, a coffee and orange juice, we just had to tip the waitress. Great deal! It was really good and we were full for a while.

I had emailed the hotel for a few questions, Kevin answered me promptly. We arrived at around 7pm, the keys were waiting for us in an enveloppe with a map of the area. Some restaurants are noted on the map. We were there on a Monday, almost everything was closed from Dunmuir, to Mount Shasta to McCloud. Bummer.

We had booked 2 nights because we stopped at McCloud for a short break 3 years ago and fell in love. Unfortunately, because of the fires, the sky was very smoky (we were looking for Mount Shasta and barely noticed him on our way) and the air just smelled like a gigantic barbecue. Very very sad. My husband being asthmatic and coming from Santiago de Chile where we're leaving right now, we were looking for fresh air… Therefore we decided to cancel the second night. Kevin and his wife were nice enough to get us some money back although they didn't have to because of the late cancellation and we weren't expecting it. We really appreciated it.

There are beautiful stores at the first floor, clothes, candies, espresso... Lovely!

I would give 5 if it wasn't for the bed who bothered me a little during the night. I almost feel like 4 is unfair since we fell in love. We hope we'll be visiting Shasta and McCloud again in the future, McCloud Mercantile Hotel will be our first choice.
