After traveling southward from Yosemite and past Fresno on Calif 99 towards Bakersfield, we decided to bed down for the night and looked for a place in the valley, checking at two exits before Bakersfield. The first did not have any motels, but exit 44 did. At first, this motel looked to be about 60's vintage, and part of a small compound consisting of a Chevron station and a recently closed restaurant. The office was even relegated to the gas station, but we found the owners to be extremely polite and accommodating, even inviting us to tour a room, whose large size, high ceilings and immaculate bathroom we later enjoyed. Best of all was an enormous and internationally diversified satellite TV selection and a low price. Great location just off of Calif 44 in a cluster of trees makes it look like a pleasant lush oasis in this dry valley. Looks like the place once had a pool and a recently closed restaurant on the premises, but the gas station carries some fresh entree items. All in all, a hidden gem, especially with the fair price, and great hospitality of the owners.
