Hog Island Oysters are the best. Many many many oysters (clams, sandwiches, wine etc.) have I happily consumed at their Ferry Building spot and now completely blown away by BBQ and half shells triple cream cheese and bread picnic at the source. What a idyllic place to experience HI Oysters! The Boat Shack has the goods-you can reserve a table and your own BBQ or just show up and let the boys shuck em up. Nice selection of Cheese, fresh bread, crackers while you wait and you can bring your own additional picnic items but why would you waste valuable oyster belly space?

Spent the majority of the day out exploring Point Reyes National Seashore. Weather was great, saw quite a few migrating gray whales at the Light House, also alot of elephant seals with their newborns on the beach. Concluded the day with a late lunch at Hog Island on Tomales Bay, just a few minutes drive in from the seashore.

We had not made a picnic table reservation. But were able to find parking nearby on the side of Hwy 1. The place was quite busy. We had brought our own picnic stuff....to go with the oysters. Stood in line for the 'take out' version of mollusks. Picked up a couple dozen of their extra small sweet waters.....a shucking glove and some hot sauce. Then back at the car....we did some improvised picnicking. Ended up excellent. The oysters were fantastic. Very sweet and oh so tender. My schucking skills improved as i worked the way thru the two dozen.

I'd recommend Hog Island...and if you have a larger group make sure you plan ahead for a table reservation.

My only complaint.....the take out line was oh so slow. One person doing what she could, very helpful and fun to talk to. But the line was long....and it took awhile, that's for sure.

Enjoy

well, that's not nearly enough! We buy em, clint shucks em -
we eat em raw, we put them on the grill, we put them in the pizza oven in a pan - he makes the hog juice mignonette - we drink our wine, --- all this renting a hotel room and staying put of course --- and the only thing close to better,,,,,, Hog Island at the Ferry Building where they serve you that pink bubbly juice as well --- where are the french fries ????

Relax and enjoy the freshest oysters possible while picnicing on the beach. They provide the table, the grill, sunshine and minor amenities. You provide friends, side dishes, wine, beer, charcoal and picnic supplies. Shuck them yourself or they do it for a small fee. Table fee is $5/person. Oysters are less than $1/oyster depending on size and quantity. Its an awesome way to spend an afternoon. Warning: reservations are required do to limited space.

What could be better than a day outside in the sunshine, sharing a table with happy strangers, bringing your dog along, and eating the freshest oysters on the bay??!! Hog Island offers it all, including valet parking, so you don't have to stress about where to park. We were there the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, about 1:30pm, after the early birds and before the 2pm reservations. There are bbq's for your use, if you choose, and many community tables to share. The 2 dozen oysters for $40 were soooo fresh, we brought a nice bottle of riesling, some cheese, and bought some crusty bread. Bring your own cocktail sauce, tho I was missing horseradish and they grated it fresh just for me!! We loved it there, and can't wait to go back.
