“Cool place to stay and right downtown”
Reviewed October 5, 2013 via mobile

My wife and I have stayed here twice. Prefer the room all by itself on the third floor. Very quiet considering there is an awesome watering hole (The Hideout) right down a couple of flights of stairs. Great owners who really care about our comfort. Very nicely furnished and even though this is a very old and historic hotel it's updated well.

Unforgetable stay, it felt we were living the history of the inn everyone couldn't have been more welcoming. The inn is a one off and you would have to search long and hard to find a lodging that come's near to this, do not miss out. In the morning we sat out on the balcony overlooking the mountains and watching the humming birds as they drank water from the dispensers hung from the beams above us. Mariposa must be the most friendly town in the United States we had a drink in the local saloon on our arrival and the server filled us in on the varied dining there was to be had in town, we finally agreed the saloon was the best for us and we sat, eat well, drank well and listened to an open mike session with superb musicians. Perfect location for visiting Yosemeti National Park during daylight hours and sampling the delights of the town in the evening.

Room was comfortable with many period decorating touches perfect for this historic hotel/inn. Loved eating breakfast on balcony surrounded by flowers. The owner Mary, was very friendly and helpful with local knowledge, restaurant recommendations and travel directions.

Just what a traveler from Alaska needed!

If you go to Mariposa don't pass up this hotel! It has a historic feel, great location right in down town you can walk to all the shops. The rooms were very clean. Very friendly staff. Even my kids loved it even though it was older than hotels we are used to.

My sister and I booked the Evelyn & Carmello room because it sounded so nice with the veranda and we were not disappointed. The room was comfortable, actually quite large. The web site photos are accurate. The ambiance is somewhat eclectic country, but it was clean and exactly what we needed after long days in Yosemite. We brought our wine and cheese to the veranda in the evenings and relaxed as we enjoyed natural beauty. Sometimes other guests were outside on the veranda as well, it is a friendly place. We had booked in the town because we thought we would like night life, but the porch was just the right thing. The owners are sweet and have lots of information to share. The breakfast was fruit, juice, coffee, yogurt and usually some sort of bread/pastry. We had it outside as well, while watching the hummingbirds devour the nectar and fight for positioning.

The owner asked us the first morning we left for the day if we needed cleaning or anything and we said no. She said to let her know if we did during the three day stay, and since we didn't say anything, she didn't come in the room, which was fine with us. I got the impression that she would have cleaned and offered new towels if we had wanted that, so just ask Mary. Don't assume you will get maid service like in a traditional hotel.

Next time we go to Yosemite, we are staying here! It is a 45 minute drive into the park though.

Room Tip: If you don't mind stairs, the Evelyn & Carmello room is great. Old buildings, so stairs are...

This hotel already has plenty of character, but I came because I read about the hummingbirds on a website. I was not disappointed, they were all over the feeders on the balcony, which also offers a nice view of the surrounding hillside. The town of Mariposa has two great restaurants right down the street and it's a beautiful 45 minute drive to the front gate of Yosemite.

What really makes this place great is the current owners. Mary Foster is absolutely the nicest lady and she even offers a military discount if you ask. Her husband served in WWII in the Pacific theater, and it's not everyday you get to talk to a hero like that. Fantastic experience.

I highly recommend this hotel, just understand that it is a very old (112 yrs) building and the owners are older and a little slower than you might like if you want snappy service. Also, if you like a million different options for breakfast, then you might be disappointed, but it's more than enough.

Room Tip: All the rooms are nice

We found this to be a clean and comfortable old inn, which has great charm due to the many original fixtures and fittings, giving you an idea of what it must have been like in the early 20th century.

The owners were very welcoming and friendly, and it was wonderful to be able to sit on the back terrace watching the hummingbirds coming to the feeders Mary has provided.

We must agree with other reviewers that the one thing that lets this hotel down is the breakfast. Whilst I know I'm not going to get a full cooked meal, given that we paid $139/night, I don't think it unreasonable to expect something more than a bagel and jelly or a not particularly good quality danish pastry out of a packet plus a yoghurt and fruit.
