I had thoroughly researched The Jamaica Bay Inn prior to my trip to Marina del Rey and had been anxious to arrive and see the beautifully remodeled hotel as well as experience the polite and helpful staff. Unfortunately, my stay there didn't materialize into the ideals I'd hoped for. Upon checking in I was informed that the Fireplace room that I'd reserved was not available. The front desk clerk, Leonard went on to say that there were only 4 fireplace rooms in the entire hotel and the rate I'd been quoted for a fireplace room could NEVER have been accurate. Being very thorough, I had the confirmation printout that Jamaica Bay Inn sent me confirming a Luxury King with Fireplace in black and white. I was very insulted when after showing him this printout that Leonard went on to say, "Well, I don't know where you got this price from?" Insinuating fraud is an unusual way to roll out the welcome mat. I was quite put off. I ended up getting a City View room without a Fireplace. Valet parking is overpriced at $18 per day. I didn't use it. I'd researched local parking and found out that there is not one, but two public parking lots on either side of Jamaica Bay Inn. I'd recommend the parking lot to the right of the hotel only because it's larger, more visible from the street and there were absolutely no other vehicles parked in the left lot one evening. During the winter the public parking is only $6 per day and the walk is literally 75 yards to the side entrance of Jamaica Bay. The hotel is nicely remodeled and looks great. The furnishings in our room were well thought out and comfortable. The problems we had were with the staff and working the "bugs" out of a new hotel. I went to the front desk one morning requesting housekeeping for our room as we had the do not disturb sign on early in the morning. Front desk staff wrote down our room number and assured us that the room would be cleaned upon our return. When we arrived back later that evening we found the bed still unmade, towels still on the bathroom floor and trash spilling out of the trash cans. Front desk staff apologized and sent someone up to empty our trash and supply us with clean towels. A clean room would have to wait til another day. I travel frequently and have stayed at many 5 star hotels. Excellent customer service is really what separates a 4 star from a 5 star. With the mix up at check in and the other gaffes made by hotel staff throughout our stay there was little or no effort made to make up for the errors/gaffes. I was offered a complimentary "breakfast for ONE" after my room was given away. When I realized it was for only one person I went back to the front desk and asked about breakfast for my girlfriend and the coupon was altered to say "two". Would I return to Jamaica Bay Inn? Probably not. Rudeness (upon check in) put me off and there is a Ritz Carlton right down the street. The rest of the hotel staff was quite friendly, but it only takes one rude employee to take away from the 99 smiling employees.
