Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites - Marina
Ranked #7 of 9 Hotels in Marina
Reviewed December 20, 2005

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Marina and were very pleased with the hotel itself. Very new and clean with large rooms and comfortable beds. we were given room 101 on the ground level (1 floor below the lobby) and realized it was quite close to the street, but traffic was not very heavy in the evening and the hotel is located in a quiet part of town. We didn't realize until about 4:30am the next morning how busy the road was! The commuter traffic noise was very loud and the room shook when buses or trucks passed by. There are 4 rooms (101, 103, 105, and 107) that face the street on each floor so be prepared for traffic noise if you get one of them. Everything else about the hotel, including the breakfast was good. We will stay there again but request a quieter room.

we got the dreded Room 117 -- a room directly below the breakfast bar! The room itself is great, I was thrilled to have been "upgraded" for free into a suite......HA.
The noise from the breakfast bar is incredibly irritating. Seems that staff uses that room for their evening breaks, and use the television too.
People (toddlers included!) walking around the breakfast bar in tennis shoes sound like thousand pound men in size 24 lead cowboy boots, and feel like they will be coming down on top of you at any time!
A nice, clean, safe hotel that was unfortunately down-graded because they insist on placing guests in rooms that should not be rented out without proper notice!

I stayed at this Holiday Inn because I had business meetings in both Monterey and Santa Cruz so it was conveniently located between both locations.
When I first got into my room, neither the internet nor phone worked. The front desk clerk immediately changed my room to a much larger one on a corner with 2 sets of windows. So what could have been a disaster was quickly rectified by a great staff.
As everyone else has mentioned, the breakfast is great, especially the cinnamon rolls.
Also, the spa area is the nicest I have ever seen at any hotel (and i have stayed at some fancy hotels). The spa is in somewhat of a rock grotto that is enclosed but open to the outdoor on one side. There is also a sauna there.
I would also recommend taking a walk down to the beach and hiking through the Marina Dunes, it is beautiful.

This was a nice hotel to stay at, approximately 15 minutes from Monterey. --So lower in price. Huge room! With sitting area, kitchenette, etc. Very nice breakfast in the morning with sooooo many options! Biggest continental breakfast I've seen at a hotel. Our room was right next to the breakfast area, close to the entrance so was a bit noisy for this reason. Otherwise, pleasant hotel experience.

The good: Great value (paid $107.10 (AAA rate) for the first two nights of our stay; went up to about $134.10 for our Friday stay (last night)), and the location worked well for us.

It's only a ten-minute or so drive to Monterey, and there are places to eat nearby as well (depending on what you're in the mood for). The first night we were there, we were tired from driving, so we went to Quizno's on Reservation Rd. We also saw a Jack In the Box and some other places. We tried going to a place called Round Table Pizza, but after standing there for a couple of minutes and not even being acknowledged, we bolted.

We got a king-size bed (the underside of the comforter was gross, so that went on the floor, but then, they usually are in hotels, right?), but I did request an extra blanket, to which our housekeeper provided. The towels were great...the best of the hotels we stayed at (we went to SF and Yosemite, and these were the plushest), and the shower head was pretty good. We aren't used to the soft water there, so it felt kinda of slimy when you showered, but that's personal preference I guess (hard water vs. soft water). Not the hotel's fault, of course.

The breakfast was pretty good. Choices of food included hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, cold cereal, waffles (Eggos), bagels, English muffins, cinnamon buns (they were good!), fruit and oatmeal (instant). We were offered a variety of juices, coffees, hot cocoa and teas as well as iced water.

One thing my husband really liked that no other hotel offered during our stay was complimentary coffee (day or night). One suggestion to Holiday Inn Express: Have a hot water carafe. Not everyone drinks coffee, and to have the choice of tea or cocoa would earn you more brownie points. Just a suggestion.

One complaint: I tried to call guest services and then the front desk (same thing?) on at least two occasions, and the phone just rang and rang and rang...as if no one was there or cared.

Overall, the hotel is conveniently located, a good value and was comfortable.

PS. We found a nice place to eat lunch/dinner called Joe's of Monterey. Excellent food, atmosphere and presentation. I had filet mignon and my husband had fish and chips, and it was excellent. So was the bread!

This was our first experience at a Holiday Inn, but not our last. We booked another one in Sacramento after this one. Wish we'd used more during our travels. Friends had booked this for the four of us and we were very pleased with it (and the AAA discount). The friendly staff helped us change to a smoking room that was just off the lobby, next to the breakfast dining room, but wonderfully quiet. A good location if you have a car, nice hot pool with outdoor sitting area and a sauna. After a full day sightseeing we spent our evening here with our own snacks and drinks. Breakfast was good, it was a little crowded being labour day weekend.

Great Hotel. This is a new hotel. The rooms are spacious with granite countertops in the bathroom. Huge hotub and Sauna. Request a room off of the main road if possible. It is only a 10 minute drive tops to Monterey. For the price and location, this is a great hotel. Most of the hotels in Monterey are old and expensive. You have to drive back out this way to get to the highway to return to San Francisco or Yosemite anyway.
