“Total Relaxation...”
Reviewed April 4, 2009

We spent 2 nights here, the service was top notch. Our room was 609 S, S for Suite...you couldn't ask for a better view...the golf carts they give you were a cute a little bonus. We ordered breakfast...well done and on time. Ordered room service...prompt and friendly.
Comfortable bed, linens, towels...absolutely no complaints.
The power went out the first night (someone struck a utility pole) it was very nice to have a flashlight in the room, otherwise we would've been in total darkness. The binoculars were a nice touch as well...it was chilly at night...the robes came in handy and the fireplace kept the room nice and cozy warm.
The pool was warm and inviting though we did not use it.
The location is just a short, very short, drive to Monterey, Pacific Grove or Moss Landing for sightseeing.
Overall totally relaxing and worth the $$$.

My wife and I had a very relaxing and romantic weekend at Marina Dunes. We had a Queen size bed with a Ocean view. We were in one of the units with no second story and just one other room that had a common wall. We had the "laziest of lazy days package." Highly recommended! I'm pretty critical of, well, almost everything. Yet I came home not thinking of one thing that was wrong with our trip. I guess if you really forced me, I could complain about the price. It was a bit high. But I felt justified spending that much by the end of the trip. I've recommended this hotel to numerous friends and family and they all come back with the same impression.

This is a great getaway location about 10min from Monterey. It is right on the beach. I booked a suite, and it was very nice.
You have 2 flat screen tv's, free wireless, seperate shower/tub, fireplace. The bar area also has a sink and mini refrigerator.
We stayed in one of the units facing the ocean, right next to the beach. You can hear the waves and see the ocean.
You get a golf cart to use during your stay, but the property is easily walked.
They will deliver continental breakfast to your room for a small fee. The restaurant on the property is good, its the Kula Grill.
I would definately reccomend this property for a nice getaway.

Love this place; been there twice, both times only for a night. Way too short I know but it is mostly out of my price range. But you can get it for around $150 sometimes and then any room you get is delightful, views over the Pacific, serenity and miles upon miles of almost virgin beach right on your doorstep.

For some reason we were upgraded both times. Nice one.

I envy those that live by the ocean as it is so nice to wake up to the sound of the waves crashing.

The patios are huge and the pool and jacuzzi are nice and warm whatever the weather.

The rooms are to die for; so comfortable, new and yet maintaining charm; from outside they don't look too great but once inside feel the warmth from the mock fireplace, enjoy the widescreen TV, play your ipod on the stereo, or just open the patio door, lie back on one of the multitude of pillows and listen to nature calling.

Sunsets are brilliant from here.

we selected this location because it was near to laguna seca raceway. it was my husband's concession to me over our 1 year wedding anniversary weekend. the location was fantastic: clear views of the beach, easy access to the ocean. nice clean, average to large sized room. nice sized bathroom.

but if you look past the attempt at being a luxe resort... there's a few things missing.

- requires a golf cart to get around the area. this is really really silly. the resort is simply NOT that big. and then on top of it.... you're told that its "your" golf cart. i watched one couple walk around the parking lot for 20 mins looking for "their" golfcart. btw, the keys all work in any golf cart?

-when you check in, you have to be shown to your room in said golf cart. meaning you have to wait for someone to take you in a little golf cart caravan to get to your room. the showing you to your place isn't the issue... its sorta the waiting around for them to get to showing your place to you.

-we got a 6am wake up call EVERY morning that we didn't ask for. front desk couldn't "clear" the wakeup call, so we had to deal with this every single day. on a weekend that's supposed to be relaxing and sleeping in... you don't want a 6am wakeup call.

overall, nice place, but its definitely not as luxurious as it makes itself out to be.

First the "good" and then the one "bad."
My husband and I were a little hesitatnt when reading the other reviews... the hotel has changed it's name- it is now the "Sanctuary Beach" resort. The property is located just north of Monterey in Marina, CA. It never took us more than 10-12 minutes to get to a parking spot in downtown Monterey as the traffic was always very light (even on weekdays). I had asked for a quiet room via e-mail and was assured it would be worked out when I arrived. Unfortunately, the type of room I booked (Dune View Suite) are all on the bottom floor of the little 2-story buildings. I read the reviews about the noise and asked the bellman if we could change it. Despite his younger age, he was nice, courteous, and very pleasant and immediately began to work on my request. The desk clerk spoke to a manager immediately and we were upgraded to an Ocean View Suite (Rm #603) with no change in rate. The staff moved all of our luggage into the room- a nice suite with 2 showers, a better-than-average coffee/tea maker, a patio, two flat screens, etc. Our ocean view was small because of the dunes but there were no other buildings obstructing our view of nature and we were mere steps from the path that led to the shoreline. The beach was uncrowded. We ran one day along the shore and within minutes we were the only people in sight. We were kept company by the many sea birds and a few dolphins surfing the waves.
The restaurant on site had a lively atmosphere and the food was good. They have anything from grilled fish tacos to filet, a full bar, and comfortable seating. I would recommend it not only for the convenience of being within walking distance to your room but also for the fare. Had we stayed longer, we would have chosen to eat there again. Also, the pool and spa were heated and clean- very relaxing.
There was only one thing that we'd put on the negative list... the walls seemed very thin and each time our sister room was entered, we thought someone was entering ours! We could even hear conversations clearly. If this is true of the other rooms (and I'm fairly certain it is) I HIGHLY recommend booking an OCEAN VIEW SUITE to avoid excessive noise from neighbors.
Bottom line is: we would definitely stay at this hotel again.

  • Liked — Close proximity to Monterey without the steep prices!
  • Disliked — The seemingly thin walls.

Overall a nice place - rooms are very well equipped but try and haggle for a decent room 613,612 as these are further from the path to the beach and single storey.

As others have commented noisy neighbors can make staying here a pain - first day was a crying baby, second night interrupted by 'classy' people having sex in adjacent room.
TV in bedroom didnt work despite being replaced 'a few days earlier'.

Staff cant be bothered and it shows - ocean 'views' are a bit suspect depending where you end up too.

Marina itself is a bit of a dive - all strip malls and nothing much else, but its very handy for Monterey as its just off the highway.
