“Great beach front location”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

A relatively small hotel but great standard, excellent dining and good sized rooms.
Very friendly staff and the quality of the dining exceeded our expectations.
Double rooms at first floor provide great space and views over sea, beach and pier

Room Tip: Avoid the first floor room adjacent the restaurant patio

We stayed there Sunday night in a King Suite. It was very nice and the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. We opened the windows and listened to the waves all night. We will stay there again. We didn't eat at the restaurant, but it has a wonderful terrace above the beach.

Room Tip: First floor is probably best.

We booked a weekend at the Malibu Beach Inn after I drove by it on the way to LAX. The hotel was every bit as luxurious and beautiful as it looked when I glanced it as I passed it on the Pacific Coast Highway.

The rooms are small (especially when you consider the nightly rate), but they are extremely well-designed and open out to amazing views of the ocean, so this didn't bother us a bit. It has a working gas fireplace which was nice. The rooms also feature these compelling paintings by a California artist called Glenn Ness, that the New York Times called "Hockney-esque."

The rooms did have a few minor drawbacks: (i) the TV seemed like an older flat screen and was actually pretty fuzzy on some channels, (ii) the air conditioning gave off some loud intermittent noises, and (iii) we found the bed (which, due to the room size, is a queen), to be kind of soft and leaving us kind of stiff when we woke up in the morning.

We ate our first night at the restaurant, and it was a superb meal. Lunch the next day and room service breakfast the following morning were all very good as well, with excellent service. We each got a spa treatment and they were both excellent as well (in my case, a massage, in my wife's, a facial). The spa is a room on the third floor, not a full spa, but like all the other rooms, it opens out to the amazing ocean view. It works well. Also, there is service on the beach, which is nearly underwater at high tide, but the attendant works hard and does a good job, and it really is beautiful there.

On services, there were two downsides. There is no business center. They offered me a laptop, but it needed a half hour to be rebooted and I ended up taking a pass and using my tablet (the wi-fi is free). The other downside is that parking is valet-only, at $27 a night, so you basically feel like you have to cough up a tip on top of that every time you are in and out of the hotel. To be fair, the valets were good guys and didn't do anything to make us feel like we had to, but you still kind of feel like you have to pay to get in and out of the hotel.

All in all, it was still a spectacular weekend.

My boyfriend and I were treated to a stay for one night at the Malibu Beach Inn, so I have no idea how much it cost. We loved it, though.

We ate that evening at the inn's own restaurant on the patio and really enjoyed it. Good quality food; I had melon to start, boyfriend had chowder, and we both had steak for mains. The mains had a decent amount of vegetable too, which was appreciated as I've found restaurants to be poor in this regard compared to Ireland. The steak was cooked properly too, as in we asked for medium rare and got it instead of steak cooked into leather! A really great meal, and you couldn't ask for a better atmosphere than by the Pacific with a beautiful crescent moon shining! There were some heaters going to take the slight chill off the air too.

The room itself was lovely; comfy and clean with a balcony which we appreciated more in the morning when we could see the ocean and not just hear it. If the sound of the waves bothered you, the inn supplied earplugs!

We had breakfast in our room which was really tasty - the only strange thing was that only jam (jelly for the US readers) was served with the toast and no butter. The tea was good - this was appreciated after three weeks in the US and often being unable to get normal tea.

The staff were great, particularly when father-in-law picked us up in the morning and accidentally locked his keys in the car. Oops. Reception called a serviceman (a car locksmith?!) out to unlock the car for us, at no charge.

Overall, a lovely experience and recommended.

Elegant little (44) room inn with excellent food, small but beautifully appointed rooms with balconies right on the ocean. Lovely to walk on the sand. A/C which is so wonderful in each room. A happening place too. Lots of young people and visitors from far and near. Very expensive, but you get what you pay for. Service is excellent in all ways. Lovely getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. No pool or fitness center, but there is a gym across the street for $20 a day. Valet parking only which I think is $35 a day. The coean is the draw here. All the other hotels in Santa Monica are not right on the ocean. This one is.

Room Tip: All rooms are the same with the exception of the king corner rooms - slightly larger, but not enough...

The Malibu Beach Inn was outstanding. My boyfriend booked this hotel as a treat for us for 2 nights at the end of our 2 week holiday this summer in California.
The rooms are fantastic with balconies over looking beautiful views of the Pacific. The sound of the waves can be heard from your bed, it was very soothing.

The restaurant onsite offered excellent breakfasts and lunches at very affordable prices overlooking the sea. It was very romantic and we even saw whales while having breakfast one morning.

I would recommend that if you are looking to stay in Malibu, this hotel should be your chosen one.

Room Tip: Seafront Rooms are incredible.

My wife and I went down to Cail for our anniversary. This hotel has such an amazing location. Amazing outdoor dining on the deck. Almost feels like you are on a boat. Amazing food both at dinner and breakfast. Only sad thing was we only had one night there. We'll be going back soon.
