I was in the area to attend the annual Vintner's Festival and had the opportunity to try this restaurant...I was not disappointed. Although others in our group were familiar with this restaurant, it was my first time there, and hopefully, it won't be the last.

Our annual trip to Los Olivos has to include lunch at the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Cafe. A lot of good things have been written about this venue. This review will be on the more macro level. Our experiences have always been very pleasing. The quality of the food and the service is excellent. The cuisine is very inspired - not over the top gourmet but carefully constructed with local ingredients and the right touch of flair. It is obvious that the chef and kitchen crew are enjoying their work and pleasing their patrons. The wait staff is well informed as we asked a number of questions about the menu. The venue is modern casual and very comfortable. We like to sit out on the veranda on decent days for lunch. The owners and crew represent a serious and successful restaurantuer at work. A very worthy choice.

The small town of Los Olivos an hour drive north of Santa Barbara, CA fits the image of a get-away-from-it-all place. The restaurant was what I was hoping for in a small town setting - that local feel, friendly people having a good time, friendly servers, excellent food. A good menu for lunch with interesting twists on many favorites. The wine store selection represented the regions vinyards very well with hundreds of bottles to choose from. This will be on my list of favorites to visit again.

Stopped here for dinner while we were staying in the area. Wasn't sure what to expect with the mixed review. Overall it was pretty good. Very good / expansive wine list. Service was ok. Although our waitress looked a little over worked we never felt neglected. We started with the Basil Arancini - fried risotto balls, molten mozzarella, tomato presse. It was very fresh and perfectly fried. I had the Pappardelle Bolognese - beef, carrots, onions, celery, extra virgin olive oil, parmesan, fresh herbs. It was tasty, but way too much food. Felt bad that so much had to go to waste. My husband had the Morro Bay Black Cod - orzo, fennel, leeks, tomato-smoked paprika broth. He said it was excellent, great flavors and well prepared fish.

Visited some friends in the area and had a great lunch at the cafe. Nice variety on the menu and outstanding wine selection. I don't generally drink wine with lunch but the place makes you feel welcome and the Bernat by the glass just seemed to complete the ambiance!
