As some of you know, my favorite hotel is the Riverplace in Portland Oregon, so when I found out I was staying at sister hotel- Toll House- for a friend's wedding, I was very excited. Could it be I would find another gem? Sadly, not quite. Toll House is perfectly located right off the main street of Los Gatos on the mountain road to Santa Cruz. The entrance is up a driveway and faces the back parking lot. (Oh well- nothing can replace the RiverPlace backdrop of the Willamette River.) The welcoming architecture is rustic, the citrus infused water and chocolate chip cookies sit waiting for guests and the staff couldn't be nicer. I stayed in a suite on the top floor- there are only three floors. The carpeting has seen better days, the hallways smelled of Febreze, but the rooms were enormous. The room decor could use an update- it is more raggedly regal than the redwood atmosphere of Los Gatos suggests and the bathroom fan clatters like a steam engine. BUT the bed is exceptionally comfortable, the free dvds were fun to watch on the flat screen and L'Occitaine supplies the toiletries. Food is so-so - the pre-wedding luau feast was hosted at the hotel in the central patio. Great buffet and service but mediocre food. Stay away from the hotel bar where the atmosphere was overly bright and strange, the bartender was surly ("You will have to wait, there is only one of me." - this after I politely stood for 10 minutes chatting to a customer while waiting to be acknowledged. There were only 6 people at the bar) The drinks, way too pricey. Skip the Holiday Inn style breakfast room and go to Gilleys, about a 10 minute walk up the street (divine on every level). Over all-if I found myself in Los Gatos, I would stay here again mainly due to the warm and polished front desk staff, the great location and the room size but the hotel itself is not a choice destination.

Room Tip: ask if there is an event in the central patio area when you stay. if so ask for a room that does not face the central patio.

Each year, in October, we drive about 2 hours from home to reach the Toll House Hotel, staying there while visiting my son's Goblyns Glen Halloween Haunt in Oak Meadow Park nearby. Guest services bends over backwards for us; we always have a choice of rooms with a view & balcony, for a discounted AAA rate, on a weekend. A lovely dining room, reduced prices during happy hour, spa, lovely patio around a fountain, under the hotel parking; really plush, comfortable beds, cozy bathrobes, L'Occtane bath products, free WiFi. Just couldn't ask for anything more.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the street on the third (top) floor have a view of the mountains, morning sun, a balcony.

We stayed 4 nights at Toll House and had a great vacation! The first night was a Saturday & he did hear a lot of noise due to two wedding parties staying at the hotel, but the front desk quieted them down quickly & took care of us satisfactorily the next morning. We slept peacefully the last 3 nights and had no other issues.

The rooms are very clean & modern. We had a spacious balcony overlooking the courtyard. They brought us fresh cookies every day which was a nice treat before bed. We also appreciated the free wi-fi in the hotel. The hot tub wasn't working the entire time we were there, that was the only disappointment.

We ate breakfast at the hotel restaurant every morning. The food was delicious - the best french toast I've ever had! And service was excellent also - Pam (the hostess) gave us many good recommendations on things to do & see in the area.

The location is perfect. You're right in the main area of Los Gatos, walking distance to many good shops & restaurants. It's also a good base to explore the many wineries close by in the Santa Cruz mountains. We took a day trip to Santa Cruz & to Capitola - a short scenic drive away & well worth exploring.

We hope to return one day, but we probably won't stay again on a weekend night!

Room Tip: I would recommend asking for a room with a courtyard view & not on the first floor.
