We are so excited to have another great restaurant in Los Gatos. Billy's Chowder House of Los Gatos is cozy and quaint with a comfortable atmosphere. We were in the mood for chowder and were pleasantly surprised with a menu of so much more! We enjoyed a salad, chowder and bowl of clams which were delicious!

We got there early as it filled up quickly. The staff was friendly and helpful even as busy as it was. We will definitely be back to try other entrees on the menu and highly recommend Billy's Chowder House!

My husband and I spent several months on the East Coast where I fell in love with the cuisine. I miss soft shell crabs, lobster rolls, and a decent chowder. Unfortunately, I didn't find any of these at Billy's.

Billy's is relatively new and it seems like most locals are willing to give it a try. The decor is on the level of a diner, but the prices are pretty stiff. We ordered a lobster roll, fried clams, and a lobster bisque. My husband had a Samuel Adams beer, which was on tap, while I drank water. Our bill came to $60.

So, for what we ordered, that seemed pretty steep.

If they are going for a low-key decor - Eastern seaboard style - I would expect to see small metal pails on the table (for disposal of shells) and rolls of paper towels. If they want to go upper scale, then there should be table linens. So, you don't quite know where they are trying to place themselves.

My lobster roll featured plenty of lobster meat and the roll was fresh and soft. But, there was no dressing and it was rather boring. It came with a cole slaw which was heavily peppered.

My husband's lobster bisque was likewise unremarkable. A proper bisque is made with heavy cream and sherry. Those flavors were AWOL from the dish. When I prepare a bisque, I will make a small swirl so that the white of the cream contrasts with the red and then sprinkle some micro-greens on top for a nice presentation. There was no such panache here.

The fried clams were plentiful, but not very flavorful. We did like the tartar sauce. To make the clams more palatable, the chef should add Old Bay seasoning.

The fact that I need to provide cooking tips for the menu items should give you an idea of the level of cuisine.

Service was so-so. The owner came over to our table and read the menu to me. I learned to read when I was quite young and I think I have it down now. It would have been more helpful to have him point out the specials or any recommendations, but he insisted that everything on the menu was wonderful.

The highlight of the meal (and this is also rather sad) was my husband's beer, which came in a nice tall chilled glass and was poured from the tap perfectly. Lest you mistake, being able to dispense beer from a tap in such a way as to provide a lager with a nice head is an art form...and any Irishman will confirm that.

I hope that these are kinks and that as Billy's finds it's sea legs, the food will get better. I may give them a few more months and try them again to see if there is any improvement.
