“The undisputed hot spot in Beverly Hills”
Reviewed September 28, 2012

From the moment I walked into the SLS, I felt like a celebrity. The staff is polite, attentive, and more than willing to go the extra mile. The hotel is beautiful, and the rooftop pool is an oasis that should not be overlooked. The rooms are modern and sleek, but the bed is pure comfort. If you are a foodie, or just a traveler with an appetite, you must try the variety of culinary options at SLS, all of which feature the inventive and delicious cuisine of Jose Andres. Andres is a superstar in the food world, and The Bazaar (the hotel's feature restaurant) is all the proof you'll need. If you're into spotting celebrities, you'll find your share at the SLS, as many A-listers and athletes consider it their home away from home.
I do a lot of traveling for business, so I've seen a laundry list of hotels. Without question, the SLS was one of my favorites on those business trips.

Room Tip: A nice room on middle floor, not too close to the elevator, is ideal. The rooms over The Bazaar (3r...

The SLS Hotel is a nice hotel, very chic and a bit elegant, definitely catering to the younger hip crowd. The hotel lighting is low levels everywhere in the hotel. As a designer, I get the low levels of light for contrast and mood but for function in the room bathrooms, it is a bit of a problem. The pool is very nice. The staff are very nice and very customer service oriented. The restaurant is a bit pricey for the quality of food. A peanut butter sandwich for the kids is 9.00. Parking is 36.00 per night, higher than NYC. The overall experience was good but not exceptional for the price asked.

Room Tip: Most all fo the rooms face a street. Right now you dont want to face the side where there is constr...

The SLS is a five star experience in every respect. The rooms, particularly the suites, and the service, including its front office managers, the lobby breakfast staff and house car, are extraordinary. I recommend it for business and pleasure without reservation.

This hotel prides itself in providing you with the most luxurious experience. We did get a bit of that during our two night stay but things weren't perfect.

The good:
Hot breakfast at the hotel restaurant
Location - close to LAX airport and Hollywood

The not-so-good:
Customer service could be better. As Platinum members, my wife and I were eligible for complimentary continental breakfast. Since we are both vegetarians, we requested for a hot breakfast substitute which was cheaper than the breakfast buffet. The manager on duty did not accommodate our request. We tried the continental buffet but it was not that great. Finally we decided to share our request (and frustration) with the front desk management. The hotel did end up offering us the hot breakfast choice but the whole process was not seamless by any means.

We were told that our room was a suite but I am yet to believe that it was a suite. It was basically a larger room but not a suite. Also the patio is shared between two rooms - it takes away the privacy!

Our room was on the 2nd floor and we could see the 6th floor pool area from our room. The music during the day on the weekends is loud.

Concierge staff is average. Their maps are difficult to read. Note that the concierge has no ability to add you to the guest list at any of the high end night clubs unless you are willing to reserve an expensive table. Our simple request to get on the guest it at the W Hollywood club (sister property of SLS) was not handled very well. The concierge told us that the only way for us to get in at W Hollywood was be there EARLY by 10 pm AND the guys had to pay $20 in cover. It was shocking to learn that SLS cannot get Platinum guests on the guest list at no cost at their sister property!

In general, I felt there were too many management controls that were preventing the staff to provide the best in class customer service.

Ultra Modern hotel that has tons of LA cool----Instantly feel like you are on an episode of the Kardashians by walking in the red carpeted door. Rooms were small but very hip -Amenities were sort of poser plush. Stay there for the scene and awesome dining @ Bazaar by Jose Andreas.

Let me start out by saying the SLS Hotel is not in the league of luxury hotels like the St. Regis, Four Seasons, and Ritz Carlton Hotels. The hotel is more in line with the W brand ... which is cool, modern, and unusual. Staying at this hotel is more about being seen, while missing the mark when it comes to true customer service and high-end hotel luxury.

The hotel is uniquely well decorated which makes it a one of a kind destination, similar to Le Parker Hotel in Palm Springs. The hotel scores high points for making you feel like you've entered another place and time. Here are a few points of interest that will explain why this hotel continues to get such mixed reviews.

Initial Welcome/Overall Customer Service/Starwood Recognition- Our first impression of the hotel was good as the street front view of the building is sleek and modern. We were greeted by a valet who took our car and bags, and quickly left us to ourselves to check in. For first time visitors, the entrance to the hotel is is not obvious and may require direction, however, none was provided. Overall, customer service during our stay was average at best. Here are a few other examples of poor customer service:
- Stephanie at check provided no greeting or explanation of the hotel as first time guests. She also forgot to offer platinum amenity. She might as well have shouted "next".
- phone alarm clock did not work in room. When asked to fix/place, hotel staff rang door bell, handed new device, and tried to leave without installing and taking the broken clock.
- Roof Top Bartender was inattentive and was more interested in closing the bar two hours prior to quitting time, than providing service.
- As our Platinum Starwood recognition we were upgraded to a king room with free Internet and water (we never received the water and not really sure the room was an upgrade). We opted for the free breakfast as our platinum amenity which included coffee, juice, breads, fruit, yogurt, shaved meats, cheese, and cereal which was a good choice.

Hotel Design/Rooms/Lighting - Overall, we liked the hotel's unique design, however, it fell short in some areas of importance. The Bazaar Restaurant is the main attraction at the hotel and takes the hotel's premier location that should have been reserved as the lobby/registration area. Instead the lobby is located off to the side in a covered outdoor space which is too small for the number of hotel guests. The other hotel restaurant, Tres, again steals high traffic space that should have been reserved for lounging guests. The hotel bedroom was adequate in size with a unique mirrored bathroom. Smokey mirrors used throughout the room were cool but not functional and contributed to the room's much talked about lighting problems.

Pool/Gym - The roof top pool is well designed and visually stunning. Although the two pools are shallow and on the small side, they accomplish the primary purpose of sunning and socializing. Throughout the day people strolled by to take pictures. A note to hotel management that maintenance is needed. Some cushions were ripped, teak furniture needed staining, and canvas tents were faded. On a positive note, the gym is well appointed and more than adequate for vacationers and business travelers. The hotel gets high points for it's pool and gym.

Location - The hotel is technically located in Los Angeles, not Beverly Hills. The good news is that you are only a few miles from Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, and some of the major attractions in LA. The bad news is that you're not within walking distance of anything except the Beverly Shopping Center. Unless you like walking long distances to your destination, you'll need a car or taxi. Hotel parking is valet only at $36 a day.

Helpful Hints -
1. Rent a car - Los Angeles is a town that is best seen via your own vehicle. Unless you plan in staying only in the Beverly Hills/Hollywood area, it more cost effective to have your own wheels.
2. Eat at Bazaar - The hotel is home to one of the best restaurants in California. Take advantage of this opportunity and make a reservation. The evening will cost you about $100 per person, but worth the one time indulgence.
3. Local Liquor Store - Buy a few bottles of you favorite wine or alcohol at Lee's Liquor which is a ten minute walk from hotel. You can then enjoy a few drinks and use the wonderful colored cut crystal glasses in your room.
4. Hang Out At The Hotel Lobby - This hotel is frequented by celebrities, so spend some of your down time reading or having a drink in the outdoor lobby. We got to see Cee Lo from "The Voice" and Reno Wilson from "Mike & Molly".
5. Use the Pool - Make sure to use the rooftop pool. Even though many reviews warn you of beautiful people with too much attitude, that was not the case for us. We loved our time there. Unless you have money to burn, don't go there hungry and avoid their average at best cocktails. The price for the type of food and drink available is not worth what you're paying.
6. Visit the Farmers Market/Grove - Make sure to spend a morning at at the Farmers Market/The Grove. It's about 2 miles away from the hotel and has great good food and shopping . The TV entertainment program "Extra" films there and you might get to see Mario Lopez and a few other celebrities. We did.

In summmary, the SLS is a cool and unique hotel. The decor and surroundings are more than enough to make it one of Los Angeles' hottest hotels. It's appeal is targeted at celebrities and young affluent adults without children. We enjoyed our stay at the SLS and will most likely pay a return visit in the future. However, if you're looking for a luxury Beverly Hills Hotel, this is not your destination. If you're a loyal Starwood member and want luxury, your best hotel option in Southern California is the St. Regis Dana Point. You should also consider staying at the W Hotel in Hollywood or Westwood, which are comparable options. So to answer the question....Is the SLS a luxury Starwood property?.....Yes, but barely.

This is a gorgeous and uniquely stylish hotel in the middle of Beverly Hills. I've been to the Bazaar for dinner with friends many times (love it -- don't miss it if visiting LA, and best with a larger group so you can taste more) but I'd never stayed in the hotel before. Went for a quick getaway and was able to check in early and check out late and enjoy the gorgeous room for what became a truly perfect getaway. The valet staff was always quick and great when I needed my car. I would highly recommend this hotel to guests visiting LA (I'm in LA) because it's right in the middle of everything, yet such an amazing experience by itself. The restaurant is a destination restaurant, the breakfast buffet is in a different area and gorgeous also, the common spaces are beautifully designed -- it's just a pleasure to visit and a real treat to be staying there.

Room Tip: I had a very quiet corner suite that was huge and restful.
