“OK as a base”
Reviewed July 22, 2012

This is ok, we were on a tour and arrived early evening. There is a dearth of nearby eating establishments unless you take a cab and we were too tired and dusty. The in house Denny's compared badly to the one we went to in Vegas. Got my 4th choice of beer off the menu and my wife had a glass of wine as that beer was the only one they had of that! The staff tried very hard but the bar was closed (not enough staff) and although it was very busy the bar had to turn people away (about 30 off our coach).. Food was average although brought quickly.
The rooms are functional - probably best to get one at the back away from the main road.
Near a very busy crossroads and there appeared to be a Hell's Angel Convention at the garage on the crossroads - complete with Police and TV cameras. Adequate for what we needed.

Room Tip: Away from the main road

First, the rooms are clean. I've stayed here twice now- a year apart- and both times my room was immaculate and cleaned every day of my stay. The bed was comfortable and they give you several choices for pillows with different levels of hardness. They also use sheets to cover the blankets they don't wash as frequently, so it feels very clean as well. The staff is extra friendly. Ask for their direction sheet. They have a list of directions to most attractions. They're not the same directions your gps will give you, these are the short cuts locals use. Because of these directions, I was able to travel around LA with no traffic holding me back. If you're going for Disneyland only, this place is far away- about an hour drive to Anaheim. It's also pretty far from LAX. However, it's smack in the middle of Santa Monica and Universal City with Griffith Park and the Getty very close. Visit the Sepulveda park behind the motel too, within walking distance. Free breakfast would make this the perfect place. Also, the hotel is loud with the cars going by, but that's city life.

Room Tip: Choose a room near the back, away from Sepulveda. They are the quietest.

We chose the Best Western Carriage Inn for two reasons: first was that the location was absolutely perfect for our trip's purpose, and second because we have found that Best Western's are a great value. Years ago (more than 20) we gave up on Best Westerns because they just weren't very nice. But a couple of years ago we tried them again and they seemed to have upped their game significantly. Now they are our first choice. As for the Carriage Inn, the room was certainly good for our needs. It probably could use a bit of updating, but the decor was very neutral and the outdated pieces really weren't all that noticeable. What is a rarity in most motels is that everything was in very good shape, there were not cracked or chipped tiles, the grout was clean and fresh, and everything worked fine. The wireless Internet was fast and reliable, the refrigerator worked well, and everything was fine. A couple of positives were that the staff was friendly and helpful and they sanitize and wrap the TV remote control between guests. As a semi-germophobe, I like that. The negatives were that the shower head didn't have much pressure and it took a while for the hot water to show up. The biggest downside is that it is NOISY. We were on the wing near Sepulveda Blvd. and the street noise is pretty intrusive. There were loud motorcycles, trucks, and sirens frequently through the night. Next time we will request a room that is nestled back further in the complex. We will definitely be staying at the Carriage Inn again, just that we'll be a bit pickier about room selection next time. It is important to realize that if you are looking for a fancy resort-type hotel, this isn't it, but if you are like us where a hotel's purpose if for sleeping, changing clothes, and showering; this is a great choice.

Room Tip: Rooms near the street are just plain noisy!

We recently spent five nights at this establishment and found it to be very good. There were three adults, which consisted of myself my wife and 18 year old daughter. What luck it was to find this little gem from all available. When we arrived it was no problem to have us check in early, after our flight from Sydney this was much appreciated.
The room was very clean and tidy with a fridge and plenty of room. The beds were very comfortable and clean. The property had all you need to keep you comfortable with washing facilities and good swimming pool if required. The location for us was good as we were driving to different locations every day and the freeway was at our doorstep.
The only negative was the Denny,s located on site was a little dirty and inside didn't smell that good. Just up the road the Galleria Plaza has many places to eat.

Room Tip: The tower suites are a bit larger.

Nice stay, clean room, nice pool. The freeway noise is loud, but tolerable.

Cons:
Location: I booked this hotel online, because it said it was somewhat close to Universal Studios. In actuality, it was about a 20 min drive on the freeway on a good traffic day.
Breakfast: I was mislead by the ad that said breakfast was included, which is offered at most hotels. I thought it would save us alot of money for our family trip. Well, when we got there, they said I had to book a special room, and the manager didn't really seem concerned. I wasn't lying or trying to get over, but we thought that came with the deal. Anyway, he didn't even compromise with us and we ended up buying our own food.
Security: This hotel is open and so there isn't parking at night when Denny's is full for the guests. There are no stall numbers, so anyone can park and leave no space. Also, we think they there were some people swimming in the pool that were not staying at the hotel. They ended stealing my mother in laws sandals poolside. Also there was a suspicious man that came up to us at night in the car. We were so scared we locked the car doors and took off. We felt it was too open and just anyone can attack you in the parking lot. We had a newborn with us, and didn't feel safe at night.
Jacuzzi: Was in a weird location. You have to walk across the parking lot from the pool to the Jacuzzi and the water is not hot enough and the jets are weak.

Pros: In general, the pool is nice and surrounded by nice trees. We loved the flowers, and the cleaning staff was great. The front desk staff was good, but they seemed overworked and often answered the phones over someone standing in front of them. Sometimes we felt neglected. I liked the coin laundry on site for families, and we had a beautiful room poolside.

In summary, I feel we paid too much for this hotel. The hotel across the street offers free hot breakfast and the rooms look the same. Also, pets are free as long as you let them know you have one.

Room Tip: If you want breakfast (Denny's All American Slam) you have to book a special room.
