The ambiance is low key. . . always busy . . .never crazy. Conversation is always possible as the noise level is never intrusive because the food is what occupies the palate. The fish is always fresh. The stalwarts; Yellowtail, Toro, Compachi,Albacore, Snapper, Scallops, Eel, Salmon all there. The delectables like Uni,Spanish Mackarel, Halibut muscle, seared Salmon are just this side of heaven. For those that like "Hollywood Sushi" . . . rolls with creative combinations, Albacore sashimi with deep-fried onions, spicy Tuna on crunchy rice . . .it's all here. The You might just wander in on an evening when Tishiro Mifuni and The Seventh Samurai film is the playing silently on the wall behind you. The Saki list is commendable. The beers are standard. The sushi chefs are fun, congenial and keep everything rolling in good speed. Shintaro is a keeper.

Liked: They were playing a black and white movie on the wall. The food was very fresh. The cold soba was really good.

Disliked: A bit dark, but I guess it had to be dark for them to project the movie onto the wall.

My wife, son and I checked out this place just up the street from our hotel. It is located in a little strip mall. From reviewing other sites, the sushi here is very good but we actually ordered cooked fish (cod and salmon) which was very good. the service was friendly and we liked the Seven samurai movie playing on the wall near our table. It seemed like a good locals place.

We ate at Shintaro twice. On our first visit, we had a great dining experience. The food and service was good. However, on our second visit we had a terrible experience with one of the waitresses. We were stopped by her on our way out of the restaurant. She 'demanded' why we did not give her a 15% tip. We told her that we left a tip but we were not aware that it was compulsory to leave 15%. We told her that we were from overseas and we were not aware of the tipping custom. She told us that this was United States and not Australia. She stood there until we gave her an additional $5.00. She made us feel extremely embarrased. It is a pity that this experience occurred. The food is quite good and reasonably priced but the staff there must be aware that there are tourists who may not understand the culture and forcing them to make up the 15% tip will affect their business. The should have an indication of how much tip to give on the bill but they should also be aware that tipping is not compulsory and no customers should ever be made to feel embarassed or guilty.
