My wife, son and I checked out this place just up the street from our hotel. It is located in a little strip mall. From reviewing other sites, the sushi here is very good but we actually ordered cooked fish (cod and salmon) which was very good. the service was friendly and we liked the Seven samurai movie playing on the wall near our table. It seemed like a good locals place.

We ate at Shintaro twice. On our first visit, we had a great dining experience. The food and service was good. However, on our second visit we had a terrible experience with one of the waitresses. We were stopped by her on our way out of the restaurant. She 'demanded' why we did not give her a 15% tip. We told her that we left a tip but we were not aware that it was compulsory to leave 15%. We told her that we were from overseas and we were not aware of the tipping custom. She told us that this was United States and not Australia. She stood there until we gave her an additional $5.00. She made us feel extremely embarrased. It is a pity that this experience occurred. The food is quite good and reasonably priced but the staff there must be aware that there are tourists who may not understand the culture and forcing them to make up the 15% tip will affect their business. The should have an indication of how much tip to give on the bill but they should also be aware that tipping is not compulsory and no customers should ever be made to feel embarassed or guilty.

Every restaurant in Hollywood is over-priced and over-hyped but not this place. This place is such a hidden gem. It's affordable, authentic, and has great service!

The japanese food here is the real deal and its made by actual japanese sushi chefs! The waiters are japanese. The fish isn't frozen. Everything taste fresh and delicious.

If you're looking to get away from the sensory overload of hollywood, step inside Shintaro and enjoy some peace, quiet, and deliciousness.

I love this place! I go there once every two week or so, but I have talked with people who go there 2-3 times a week. It is located in a strip mall and is not a fancy restaurant. The sashimi is SO fresh. The kumamoto oyster is so delicious, specially the way thy prepare it -very refreshing and tasty. Their seafood salad is also very yummy. The cook the kamachi Kama perfectly every time. I highly recommend this place if you were in the Hollywood area.
