“Amazing experience”
Reviewed August 8, 2012

I stayed at this hotel almost 3 years ago with my husband and we loved it. We had a huge suite which was beautifully decorated, and the location could not be better. As a result, I booked a room for my sister and her husband for their wedding night. The lady who helped me with the reservation, Lisette, was phenomenal. She was so friendly and went out of her way to ensure that they would have the best experience possible. It is so refreshing to receive such great customer service. I highly recommend this hotel.

Our second stay at the Erwin - and each experience gets better and better!!
Steve and Athena provide such impeccable, personal service, the Rooftop is like our own private (insanely romantic) retreat! Never been treated better.

On the front desk, Miguel took care of making sure we received the same, ocean view room we got on our first visit.

Barlo is a good option for a quick breakfast before launching out onto the boardwalk.

Everyone on staff greeted us with a smile - and luckily the beach greeted us with Sun and heat!

Can't wait to find an excuse to go back!!

Booked last minute through Booking.com. Reserved a suite, received a standard king. FDA (Miguel) was great and other front desk support/valet very friendly. Requested high floor with view if possible. Received room 614 - end of hall facing ocean and Venice Blvd. Great view for sunset! Checked in early (2pm) without a fuss. Love hotels that allow check in when the room is ready. Great bath amenities - Lather.

TIP: If on lower floor - take the stairs up/down. Elevator (one) is small and takes a long time. If on higher floors take stairs down.

Rented bikes across the street for a 4 hour afternoon ride to Santa Monica along the famed Venice/SM bike path. This is a must for anyone wanting to explore, get some excerise and fresh air. Had lunch on the Santa Monica pier.

Hotel rooftop bar is great for view but seating is limited and assigned through host/hostess. Typical for trendy roof top locales in LA. The bar service was slow to non-existent. DJ plays hip tunes (heavy bass thump) till 1 AM. Didn't know the party would be direcly above our room so be forewarned. Not a big deal for us as we went out for the evening and had our fair share of adult beverages. Be sure to close slider befor sleeping as Danny's across the street provides a loud party mix of screaming, live band and car noise until 2:30 AM. Hey its Venice on a Sat PM!

Hotel restaurant/bar Barlo was cool and service was fast and friendly. Try Makers Mark and Hard Ginger Ale combo! Damn that was good.

I will return to the Erwin again when I need a dose of Venice and great nightlife.

Stayed here for one night with my family. We had a king suite which was very spacious. The interior was cool. The king bed was fabulous but the sofabed was nothing to talk about...
The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable about Venice beach and Santa Monica.

The location is as close to Venice beach as you want to stay.

Hotel is pricy and you will need to add internet access and (valet) parking to the bill. We tried the co-located Larry which was nice - with a fine beer menu.

I'm not sure if I would stay here again - would probably find something in Santa Monica instead.

The feeling you get entering this hotel is more like a youth hostel than a $400 a night hotel.

Front desk staff were helpful and did their job, though ever so cool and laxed in their corner desk. I guess you should be carrying a surf board under your arm to feel part of the gang.

Rooms (twin-bed, partial ocean view) where ok sized, but with a bizarre solution for the bathroom. You were to include all in the hotel room when going to the toilet, an open on the sides glass slide door.

The balcony had partial ocean view as promised, but also the slumish view of the back alleys, not making it actually very tempting to spend time out there.

The restaurant was small, but not that difficult to get a table. It turned out there were a reason for this. The staff seemed to be lacking basic training, so if you finally were lucky enough to place an order, you could wait ages to get it. The funny part was that there were not many guest and quite a lot of staff, that actually were running at times, meanwhile our food was getting cold ready to be picked up by the waiter. There also seemed to be no communication between waiters.

Finally, location: To me Venice beach was very much a "in da hood" place, with a lot of mentally deranged people and pushers. There were actually an assault one morning, a raving mad woman screaming and attacking people.

Conclusion: extremely overpriced.

Note to self: make better research next time.

We stayed at Hotel Erwin for one night in transit from Mexico to Sydney at the end of a month-long vacation.

The location of this hotel meant that we could enjoy an extra day of holidaying without wasting a night in transit!

The bed was one of the most comfortable I've slept on. The sheets were lovely. The bathroom toiletries were top quality (we lost our luggage in transit so this came in handy!) We had a view of the ocean from the balcony. The staff were among the friendliest I've ever come across.

We had a room on the newly-added sixth floor so I cannot speak for the original rooms on the lower floors.

My single negative is that the room was advertised as "Ocean View". Although I could see the ocean from the balcony, I could not see the ocean from my room. The ocean is perpendicular to the balcony. This doesn't affect my rating of the hotel as all we needed was a comfortable bed in a convenient location. Both of those requirements were exceeded.

We also ate in the restaurant. The food was fantastic.

Room Tip: Aim for a room on the newly-added 6th floor.

First of all, let me say that the location of the Erwin is probably the best you can get in Venice. That said, we stayed there for one night during our honeymoon trip and picked Erwin over other accomodations, because it gave us the idea of being better maintained and catered than average. Well, we were wrong. When I pay first class boutique hotel rates (a little less than $500 per night for a beach/sunset view king room) I don't expect to enter a room that has stained linens, is dusty and has hair left in the bathroom. So the first thing we had to do was to ask them to make the room over again. Plus everything (internet connection, breakfast, parking) is an extra so the final check also ballooned a bit. Next time we want to stay in Venice we'll definitely look for something else.
